His father, Milton Guirado da Silva, built his first go-kart. This early vehicle used a small 1 hp lawnmower engine. Senna began competitive kart racing when he was 13 years old. He competed in the Karting World Championship five times between 1978 and 1982. During this time, he had a fierce rivalry with Terry Fullerton. Senna later described racing against Fullerton as "pure racing" because it lacked money and politics.

After karting, Senna moved into higher levels of open-wheel racing. In 1981, he moved to England to compete in Formula Ford 1600. He won both the British and Townsend Thoresen Championships that year. He later dominated the British and European Championships in 1982. In 1983, he competed in the British Formula Three Championship. He won the title after a very close battle with Martin Brundle. That same year, he also won the inaugural Macau Grand Prix. These successes prepared him for the highest level of the sport: Formula One.

Senna made his Formula One debut in 1984 with the Toleman team.

He quickly gained a reputation for being excellent in wet weather. For example, he performed exceptionally well at the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix. During that race, he climbed through the field to challenge the leader, Alain Prost. He later moved to the Lotus team to replace Nigel Mansell. At Lotus, he took his first pole position and his first Grand Prix victory. He remained with Lotus for several seasons, finishing third in the 1985 World Drivers' Championship.

One of the most famous periods of Senna's career was with McLaren.

He joined McLaren in 1988 to partner with Alain Prost. They drove the Honda-powered MP4/4, which was a very dominant car. That season, the pair won 15 of the 16 Grands Prix held. Senna won his first World Drivers' Championship title by only three points. He won eight races that year, which was a record at the time. His rivalry with Prost was intense and led to famous collisions at Suzuka in 1989 and 1990.
