Ascari's passion for racing began in his childhood. His father, Antonio Ascari, was a famous Grand Prix star. Antonio died in an accident during the 1925 French Grand Prix. Despite this loss, Alberto pursued the same dream. He once ran away from school twice to fund his racing. He even sold his school books to pay for it. He famously said he only obeyed one passion: racing.

His professional career moved through several important stages. He first rode for the Bianchi motorcycle team at age 19. In 1940, he began racing cars regularly after the Mille Miglia. He later joined the Scuderia Ferrari team. Enzo Ferrari was a close friend of Alberto's father. This connection helped Ascari achieve great success with Ferrari.

Ascari achieved historic milestones in Formula One. He won the World Drivers' Championship in 1952 and 1953. This made him the first two-time champion in history. He was also the first driver to win consecutive titles. At age 34, he was the youngest champion at that time. He held the record for most titles from 1952 to 1954.

His racing career included many different types of events. He competed in the 1952 Indianapolis 500 in America. He was the only European driver in that race for eleven years. In 1954, he won the Mille Miglia driving a Lancia. During that race, he used a rubber band to fix a broken throttle spring. He also drove for Maserati during his career.

In 1954, Ascari left Ferrari for the Lancia team. This move is considered the low point of his career. His Lancia car was not ready for the final race of the season. Because of this, he had to drive for Maserati and Ferrari as a guest. He finished the season without completing any of his four Grands Prix. He spent much of the year waiting for the Lancia D50 to be ready.

Tragedy occurred during a testing session in May 1955. Ascari was at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza to watch a friend. He decided to try a few laps in a Ferrari 750 Monza. He was wearing street clothes and a different helmet. On the third lap, his car skidded and somersaulted twice. Ascari died from his injuries a few minutes later.

The racing community honored his memory at Monza. The high-speed corner where he crashed was renamed the Curva del Vialone. It was later replaced by a chicane called the Variante Ascari. Ascari remains a significant figure in racing history. He is the last Italian to win the World Drivers' Championship. He remains Ferrari's only Italian champion.
