Schiaffino possessed a very versatile style of play. In the early years of his career, he often acted as an inside forward or a second striker. He frequently played on the left side of the formation. As he grew older, he transitioned into an attacking midfielder role. He also functioned as a deep-lying playmaker. This means he controlled the game from a position further back in the midfield. Later in his career with Roma, he even played as a sweeper. A sweeper is a defensive player who stays behind the main line of defense.

His tactical ability was supported by a slender physique and great vision. He had a unique capacity to read the game and dictate its tempo. This allowed him to orchestrate plays for his teammates. While he was known for elegance and creativity, he was also a hard worker. He contributed to defense by tracking back to help his team. He would put pressure on opponents to win the ball. He was also known for using sliding tackles to challenge other players.

Schiaffino's club career began in his native Uruguay. He played for Peñarol for eight successful years. During his time there, he won several titles. These included the Uruguayan First Division in 1949, 1951, and 1953. He also won the Uruguayan Competition Tournament and the Honor Tournament multiple times. In September 1954, he moved to Italy to play for AC Milan. The club paid 52 million Lire for him. This was a world record fee at that time.

At AC Milan, Schiaffino became a central figure in a team of international stars. He played alongside players like Nils Liedholm and Gunnar Nordahl. During his time with the club, he played 171 games and scored 60 goals. He helped Milan win three Serie A national championships. These victories occurred in 1955, 1957, and 1959. He also won the Latin Cup in 1956. In 1958, he reached the European Cup final. Milan lost that match to Real Madrid with a score of 2–3 after extra time. He finished his club career at Roma. He played two seasons there and helped the team finish fifth in the standings.

Schiaffino was a dual international who represented two different national teams. He played for Uruguay from 1946 to 1954. He earned 21 caps and scored nine goals for them. He was a key part of Uruguay's 1950 FIFA World Cup victory. This famous win against Brazil in its own stadium was called the Maracanazo. Schiaffino scored one goal during that final match. He also helped Uruguay reach fourth place in the 1954 World Cup. Later, he represented the Italy national team from 1954 to 1958. He was eligible to play for Italy because his paternal grandfather was from the Liguria province. He earned four caps for the Italian national team.

His legacy is supported by many prestigious rankings and awards. An IFFHS poll ranked him as the best Uruguayan footballer of all time. He was also named the 17th greatest player of the twentieth century. He received the FIFA World Cup Silver Ball in 1950. This award recognized him as the second-best player in that tournament. He was also the top goalscorer of the 1956 Latin Cup. Schiaffino passed away on 13 November 2002. He is buried at the Cementerio del Buceo in Montevideo.
