Born on October 25, 1946, in Valparaíso, Chile, he became a legendary figure across South America. He was a central defender known for his elegance, composure, and leadership. Many fans and experts call him "Don Elías" as a sign of deep respect. He was not just a skilled athlete, but also a celebrated gentleman on the pitch. Throughout his long career, he earned a reputation for being a clean and fair player. In fact, he was only shown a red card once in his entire eighteen-year professional career.

As a central defender, Figueroa used a specific set of skills to control the game. He acted as a sweeper, a role that requires reading the movements of the opposition. He used tight marking to stop attackers and had a keen ability to anticipate plays. Once he gained possession of the ball, he did not simply kick it away. Instead, he used his vision and calm composure to launch counterattacks. He often used short, incisive passes to move his teammates forward into scoring positions. He was also a physical presence who was very strong in one-on-one situations and in the air.

Figueroa's professional journey began in his home country of Chile. He started with local clubs like Deportivo Alto Florida and Deportivo Liceo in Quilpué. In 1962, he joined the youth system of his hometown club, Santiago Wanderers. He turned professional in 1963 at the age of 16 while playing for the Santiago Wanderers first team. After a brief loan to Unión La Calera, his talent attracted international attention. Following the 1967 South American Championship in Montevideo, he was acquired by the Uruguayan club Peñarol. At that time, Peñarol was a dominant force, having won the Intercontinental Cup.

His time in Uruguay was incredibly successful and established him as a star. While playing for Peñarol, he was named the best player in the Uruguayan Championship in 1967, 1968, and 1971. He helped the club win the Uruguayan Championship three years in a row from 1967 to 1969. In 1972, he moved to Brazil to join Internacional de Porto Alegre. This move marked a new chapter of greatness in his career. In Brazil, he won the Brazilian championship in 1975 and 1976. He also won five Campeonato Gaúcho Championships with the club.

One of the most famous moments of his career happened in 1975. During the "Brasileirão" final against Cruzeiro, Figueroa scored what fans call the "Illuminated goal." As the clouds moved to block the sun, a single streak of sunlight hit the exact spot where he headed the ball into the net. This moment became a part of football legend. During his years in Brazil, he was elected the league's best central defender for four consecutive seasons. He also won the Bola de Ouro, the Brazilian Player of the Year award, in 1972 and 1976. His dominance was so complete that local journalists divided Brazilian football history into "before and after Figueroa."

Figueroa's individual honors are among the most impressive in the sport. He was named the South American Footballer of the Year for three consecutive years from 1974 to 1976. He also represented the Chilean national team 47 times. He played in three different FIFA World Cups: 1966, 1974, and 1982. In the 1974 tournament in Germany, he was elected to the all-star team and named the best central defender of the tournament. Over his twenty-year career, Figueroa amassed a total of 22 titles. He was a consistent leader, serving as captain for every team he played for.

His legacy continues to be recognized by the global football community. In 1999, the IFFHS voted him the 8th best South American player and the 37th best player in the world of the 20th century. In 2004, the legendary Pelé named him one of the 125 best living football players. He was also part of the Great Masters Cup in Cannes, France. After retiring in 1982, he worked as a successful television sports commentator. He even explored a potential run for the FIFA presidency in 2011 to help improve the sport. Figueroa remains a symbol of excellence and integrity in the world of football.
