A striker is a player whose primary role is to score goals. Eusébio earned nicknames like the "Black Panther," the "Black Pearl," and "o Rei," which means "the King." He was celebrated for his immense speed and athletic skill. His technical ability and powerful right-footed shots made him a prolific scorer. Over his career, he scored 733 goals in 745 matches. Because of this talent, he is often listed among the greatest players in history.

Eusébio's journey began in the Mafalala neighborhood of Lourenço Marques, Mozambique.

He was born on 25 January 1942 to Laurindo António da Silva Ferreira and Elisa Anissabeni. His childhood was marked by extreme poverty. He often skipped school to play barefoot football on improvised pitches. Since real equipment was scarce, he and his friends used balls made of socks stuffed with newspapers. He played for a local amateur team called Os Brasileiros. He later joined Sporting Lourenço Marques, where he scored 77 goals in 42 appearances between 1957 and 1960.

His transition to the major club Benfica was a complex and disputed process.

In 1960, a Brazilian player named José Carlos Bauer discovered him. Bauer recommended Eusébio to his former coach, Béla Guttmann, who was then coaching Benfica. The transfer involved a fee of 400,000 Portuguese escudos. This signing was legally contested by Sporting CP, which also wanted to sign him. To protect him from rival clubs, Benfica moved Eusébio to a holiday home in the Algarve region. During this twelve-day period, he even completed his 4th-grade studies. He finally joined Benfica officially in May 1961.

Once at Benfica, Eusébio became the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

He scored 473 goals in 440 competitive matches for the team. His success helped Benfica win eleven Primeira Liga titles. He also helped the club win the European Cup. Eusébio was a frequent top scorer in major European competitions. He was the European Cup top scorer in the 1964–65, 1965–66, and 1967–68 seasons. He also won the Bola de Prata, which is the award for the top scorer in the Primeira Liga, a record seven times.

Eusébio achieved several historic individual milestones that set him apart from other players.

During the 1966 FIFA World Cup, he led Portugal to a third-place finish. He was the tournament's top scorer with nine goals. This remains the record for most World Cup goals by a Portuguese player. His impact was recognized by other football legends. The famous player Pelé included Eusébio in his 2004 FIFA 100 list of the best living footballers. Additionally, Alfredo Di Stéfano once stated that Eusébio would always be the best player of all time.

Eusébio's legacy continues through his status as a global ambassador for the sport.

He was elected as the ninth-best footballer of the 20th century by the IFFHS. He was also ranked tenth by World Soccer magazine. In 2003, the Portuguese Football Federation named him the Golden Player of Portugal. This title honored him as their most outstanding player of the previous 50 years. Even after his death in 2014, his name remains a standard for excellence in footballing circles.
