He is often regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the British game. Matthews achieved several historic milestones that set him apart from his peers. He was the only player to receive a knighthood while he was still an active footballer. Additionally, he was the first person to win both the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards. His extraordinary skill with the ball earned him nicknames like "The Wizard of Dribble" and "The Magician."

Matthews mastered the art of dribbling through intense, solitary practice. As a child, he spent countless hours practicing his ball control around kitchen chairs in his backyard. He developed innovative techniques to bypass defenders on the pitch. Instead of waiting for a defender to commit to a challenge, he used a deft swerve to move past them. He also utilized a body swerve to trick opponents and create space. This disciplined approach to training allowed him to maintain top-level fitness for an incredible duration. He eventually became the oldest player to play in England's top division at age 50 years and 5 days.

His professional journey began in Hanley, Staffordshire, where he was born in 1915. His father, Jack Matthews, was a local boxer known as the "Fighting Barber of Hanley." While his father hoped Stanley would become a boxer, Stanley chose football at age 13. He joined Stoke City as an office boy on his 15th birthday, earning £1 per week. By his 17th birthday, he signed as a professional player. At that time, he received the maximum wage of £5 per week.

Matthews's club career was defined by long, successful periods with two major teams. He spent 19 years with Stoke City, also known as the Potters. During his time there, he helped the club win the Second Division title in the 1932–33 and 1962–63 seasons. He also played for Blackpool for 14 years. In 1953, he led Blackpool to an FA Cup victory. This performance was so dominant that the match became known as the "Matthews final."

On the international stage, Matthews was a vital part of the England national team. Between 1934 and 1957, he earned 54 caps for his country. He represented England in both the 1950 and 1954 FIFA World Cups. He also helped his team win nine British Home Championship titles. His individual excellence was recognized globally when he won the inaugural Ballon d'Or in 1956. This award identified him as the best footballer in Europe for that year.

The Second World War interrupted his professional career from age 24 to age 30. During this time, he served in the Royal Air Force and rose to the rank of corporal. He played many unofficial games for various clubs, including guest appearances for Blackpool and matches for Scottish sides like Rangers. One notable event during this period was the Burnden Park disaster. This tragic crowd crush during an FA Cup match resulted in 33 deaths and 500 injuries. Matthews contributed £30 to the disaster fund following the event.

After retiring from professional play, Matthews continued to share his passion for the sport. He served as a general manager for Port Vale between 1965 and 1968. He also traveled globally to coach amateur players. In 1975, he traveled to South Africa to coach in Soweto. Despite the restrictive apartheid laws in place at the time, he established an all-black team called "Stan's Men."
