Gordon Banks was a legendary English professional footballer who specialized as a goalkeeper. A goalkeeper is the player responsible for protecting the net and preventing the opposing team from scoring. Many experts consider him one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the sport. Over a professional career spanning 20 years, Banks made 679 appearances for his clubs. He also earned 73 caps for the England national team. His career was defined by remarkable skill, intense training, and resilience in the face of physical challenges.

Banks developed his unique style through self-discipline and communication. In an era before specialized goalkeeping coaches existed, he took it upon himself to improve. He organized extra practice sessions to master difficult skills, such as coming out to catch high crosses. He also became a modern, vocal goalkeeper. This meant he used his voice to direct his defenders, ordering them into positions to create a more effective defense. This leadership helped transform how the position was played.

His journey began in the working-class area of Tinsley in Sheffield. After leaving school at age 15, he worked as a bagger for a coal merchant. This labor helped build the upper body strength necessary for professional sports. He was discovered while watching an amateur match for Millspaugh. A trainer invited him to play because he knew Banks had played for Sheffield Schoolboys. This led to a trial with Chesterfield in March 1953. He signed a part-time contract for £3 a week in July 1953. He eventually made his first-team debut for Chesterfield in November 1958.

In July 1959, Leicester City purchased Banks from Chesterfield for £7,000. He initially served as a reserve player behind established keepers like Dave MacLaren. However, after the first team conceded 14 goals in five games, Banks was recalled. He soon became the undisputed number one for the club. During his time at Leicester, he reached the 1961 FA Cup final. He also played in the 1964 League Cup final, which Leicester won by defeating West Ham United 4-3 on aggregate. Banks also helped the team reach the 1965 League Cup final, though they lost to Chelsea.

Banks achieved global fame during his time with the England national team. He started every match during England's successful 1966 World Cup campaign. In the 1970 World Cup, he performed what is often called one of the greatest saves in history. He prevented a goal from the famous Brazilian player Pelé.

Despite his individual brilliance, England was defeated by West Germany in the 1970 quarter-finals while Banks was absent due to illness. Later, while playing for Stoke City, he won the 1972 League Cup, which was the club's only major honor.

Tragedy struck in October 1972 when a car crash changed his life. The accident caused him to lose the sight in his right eye. This injury eventually ended his career in England, but it did not stop his passion for the game. He moved to the United States to play for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1977 and 1978. Remarkably, even with vision in only one eye, he was named the NASL Goalkeeper of the Year in 1977. He achieved this after posting the best defensive record in that league.

Banks's legacy is supported by numerous prestigious awards and statistics. He was named the FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972. He also received the FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year award on six different occasions. The IFFHS ranked him as the second-best goalkeeper of the 20th century, trailing only Lev Yashin. His career serves as a testament to how technical skill and mental strength can overcome significant physical adversity.
