Peter Bolesław Schmeichel is a legendary Danish former professional footballer. He specialized as a goalkeeper, the player responsible for guarding the net. Schmeichel is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the sport. In 1992 and 1993, he was voted the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper. The International Federation of Football History & Statistics even ranked him among the top 10 goalkeepers of the 20th century. His impact was so significant that he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

Physically, Schmeichel was a commanding presence on the pitch. He was very tall and had a large frame. Because of his size, he required specially-made XXXL football shirts. He was known as a fierce competitor who led his team through vocal instruction. He often loudly criticized his defenders if he perceived they were making mistakes. While most goalkeepers focus only on preventing goals, Schmeichel was unusually active in attack. He scored 11 goals during his professional career, including one goal for the Denmark national team.

Schmeichel's path to professional stardom involved several different jobs. Before his football career took off, he worked in a textile factory's dyeing department. He also worked as a cleaner at an old people's home for 12 months. He held an office position with the World Wildlife Fund, where he eventually became a sales manager. He also worked for a flooring firm, but his knees could not support his weight for eight hours a day. Eventually, a job at an advertising firm became his final role before he signed with Brøndby.

His professional journey began in Denmark with clubs like Gladsaxe-Hero and Hvidovre. At Gladsaxe-Hero, he met his mentor, Svend Aage Hansen, who later became his father-in-law. Schmeichel moved to Brøndby, where he won the 1st Division four times. During the 1990–91 UEFA Cup, he helped his team reach the semi-finals. He kept seven clean sheets, meaning the opposing teams scored zero goals, during that tournament. His success in Denmark eventually led to a major international transfer.

On 6 August 1991, Manchester United signed Schmeichel for £505,000. Manager Alex Ferguson later described this signing as the "bargain of the century."

During eight seasons at Manchester United, he won 15 trophies. These included five Premier League titles and three FA Cups. In 1999, he captained the club to a historic treble. This meant winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in a single season. He famously saved a penalty from Dennis Bergkamp during the 1999 FA Cup semi-final.

Schmeichel also had a long and successful career with the Denmark national team. He played in 129 matches for his country between 1987 and 2001. He helped Denmark win the UEFA European Championship in 1992. He also represented his nation at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He captained the national team in 30 different matches. While his record for most caps was eventually broken by Simon Kjær in 2023, Schmeichel remains a central figure in Danish football history.

After leaving England, Schmeichel played for Sporting CP in Portugal. He helped them win the Primeira Liga title in the 1999–2000 season. This victory ended an 18-year period without a championship for the club. He later returned to England to play for Aston Villa. On 20 October 2001, he became the first goalkeeper to score a goal in the Premier League. This was a rare feat that only a few others, such as Alisson Becker, have since achieved.

Footballing excellence appears to be a family trait for the Schmeichels. His son, Kasper Schmeichel, followed in his footsteps as a professional goalkeeper. Kasper has played for the Denmark national team and the Scottish club Celtic. Peter Schmeichel's career spanned from 1981 to 2003 and yielded 24 total trophies. His legacy is cemented by his ability to dominate the penalty area and lead his teammates to victory.
