Cantona's professional journey began in France with several different clubs. He started at his local team, SO Caillolais, where he played over 200 matches. Although he originally wanted to be a goalkeeper like his father, his creative instincts moved him to the front of the field. He made his professional debut for Auxerre on 5 November 1983. After a period of national service, he played for Martigues and then returned to Auxerre. He eventually transferred to Marseille for a French record fee of 22 million francs. He also spent time on loan at Bordeaux and Montpellier. At Montpellier, he helped the team win the French Cup.

His career was often marked by intense personality and disciplinary challenges. Cantona was known for being charismatic and outspoken. However, he frequently had disagreements with his coaches and teammates. In 1989, he was banned for a month after kicking a ball at a crowd during a friendly match. Later, while playing for Nîmes, he threw a ball at a referee. This led to a disciplinary hearing where he called the committee members "idiots." These incidents led to a temporary retirement in December 1991. He eventually decided to restart his career by moving to England.

In 1992, Cantona joined Leeds United on a loan deal. Leeds paid £100,000 to Nîmes to secure his services initially. They later paid £900,000 to sign him permanently. During his time at Leeds, he helped the team win the final Football League First Division title. He was a key part of the squad that helped secure the championship. He also scored a notable hat-trick in the 1992 FA Charity Shield against Liverpool. This achievement placed him among a small group of players to score three or more goals at Wembley Stadium. His success at Leeds prepared him for his most famous era.

Cantona's move to Manchester United transformed him into a legendary figure. He wore the iconic number 7 shirt and was famous for turning up his collar. Fans affectionately gave him the nickname "King Eric." His time at the club was incredibly successful in terms of trophies. He won four Premier League titles within five years. He also won two League and FA Cup Doubles. In 2003, Inside United magazine voted him as the club's greatest-ever player. He was later inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.
