He is a former player, coach, and media analyst from Ireland. Many people consider him one of the greatest defensive midfielders in history. A defensive midfielder is a player who works in the middle of the field to stop the other team from scoring. Keane was known for his aggressive and highly competitive style of play. This intense attitude helped him become a successful leader on the pitch. He was even named to the FIFA 100 list in 2004. This list honors the world's greatest living players.

Keane's journey to the top of football involved many different stages and clubs. He began his career in Ireland with the semi-professional club Cobh Ramblers. In 1990, he moved to England to join Nottingham Forest. After impressing there, he made a massive move to Manchester United. He joined United for a fee of £3.75 million. This was a British transfer record at that time. He eventually finished his playing career at the Scottish club Celtic in 2006. Throughout his 18-year career, he played for several major teams across different countries.

His early life in Cork helped shape his strong character. He grew up in a working-class family in the Mayfield suburb. His father, Maurice, worked at a local brewery and a knitwear company. The Keane family was very interested in sports. Before he became a famous footballer, Roy practiced boxing for several years. He competed in a novice league and won all four of his bouts. While playing for the junior club Rockmount, he was voted "Player of the Year." Even though he was once told he was "too small" for certain squads, he never let that stop him.

At Manchester United, Keane reached the highest level of success. He served as the club captain from 1997 until he left in 2005. During his 12 years at the club, he helped them win many prestigious trophies. He won seven Premier League titles and four FA Cups. He also helped the team win the UEFA Champions League.

In total, Keane won 19 major trophies during his club career. This makes him the joint most decorated Irish footballer of all time. He shares this impressive record with Denis Irwin and Ronnie Whelan.

Keane's playing style was often described as a "box-to-box" midfielder. This means he was a dominating presence who moved constantly between both ends of the field. He was highly skilled but also very disciplined in his competitive drive. However, his intensity sometimes led to trouble on the field. He received 11 red cards during his time at Manchester United. A red card means a player must leave the game immediately. One famous incident involved a cruciate ligament injury in the 1997–98 season. This injury occurred during a tackle on a player named Alfie Haaland.

After retiring from playing, Keane moved into football management. He started his coaching career at Sunderland. He took the team from 23rd position in the Football League Championship to winning the division title. This success earned the club promotion to the Premier League. He also served as the manager of Ipswich Town from 2009 to 2011. Later, he worked as an assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland national team. He held this role from 2013 until 2018. He also had brief assistant roles at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Today, Keane remains a major part of the football world through the media. He works as an in-studio football analyst for British channels like ITV and Sky Sports. In this role, he uses his deep experience to explain the game to viewers. His long history of excellence was officially recognized in 2021. That year, he was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame. His career shows how hard work and a competitive spirit can lead to greatness. From a small club in Ireland to the top of the world, his impact on the sport is lasting.
