He is widely regarded as one of the greatest British players in history. Throughout his career, he primarily operated as a forward, a position focused on scoring goals. However, he also demonstrated versatility by playing in various midfield roles. Rooney's impact on the sport is measured by his massive goal tallies and trophy collections. He became Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals.

He also served as the record goalscorer for the England national team from 2015 to 2023.

Rooney's professional journey began with an intense focus on youth development. He joined the Everton youth team at the age of nine. During his time with Copplehouse boys' club, he scored 99 goals in a single season. This high scoring rate helped him get noticed by Everton scouts. By age 15, he was already playing for the under-19s. He made his professional debut for Everton in 2002 at just 16 years old.

Before his 17th birthday, he scored a winning goal against Arsenal. This feat made him the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at that time.

In the summer of 2004, Rooney moved from Everton to Manchester United. The transfer involved a fee of £25.6 million. This was the highest fee ever paid for a player under 20 years old.

At Manchester United, he achieved immense success by winning 16 different trophies. He became one of only two English players to win the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, League Cup, UEFA Europa League, and FIFA Club World Cup. His scoring record at United includes 183 Premier League goals. This total is the third-highest ever scored by a player for a single club in that competition. He trails only Harry Kane and Sergio Agüero.

Rooney's international career with England was equally significant and record-breaking. He made his senior debut in February 2003 at age 17. This debut made him England's youngest-ever goalscorer.

He also faced several red cards and suspensions during his playing days. For example, he was sent off in a Champions League match against Villarreal for sarcastically clapping at a referee. In 2006, he received a three-match ban after an incident involving a defender named Pepe. These moments were part of the high-pressure environment of professional football. He managed to overcome these setbacks to remain a top-tier competitor.

Today, Rooney has transitioned from playing into the field of football management. He most recently served as the head coach for the EFL Championship club Plymouth Argyle.
