He is widely considered one of the greatest managers in the history of the sport. Ferguson is most famous for his long tenure at Manchester United. He led the club from November 1986 until his retirement in 2013. During these 26 years, he won 38 trophies. This total includes 13 Premier League titles and five FA Cups. He also secured two UEFA Champions League titles in 1999 and 2008.

His success earned him a knighthood in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honours list. This title, "Sir," recognizes his immense service to the game.

Ferguson's journey began long before he became a world-famous manager. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 31 December 1941.

His father worked as a plater's helper in the shipbuilding industry. Ferguson grew up in a tenement on Govan Road. He started his football career as an amateur with Queen's Park. At age 16, he made his debut as a striker. He was a prolific scorer during his playing years. In the 1965–66 season, he scored 45 goals in 51 games for Dunfermline Athletic. This performance made him the top goalscorer in the Scottish league.

His playing career included a record-breaking move to Rangers. The transfer fee was £65,000, which was a record for two Scottish clubs. While at Rangers, he performed well in European competitions. He scored six goals in nine appearances in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. However, his time at the club ended under difficult circumstances. After a loss in the 1969 Scottish Cup final, he was moved to the junior side. Ferguson later suggested that his exclusion from the first team might have been due to religious discrimination. He had married a Catholic woman, Cathy Holding. He eventually moved to Falkirk and later Ayr United to finish his playing career in 1974.

Ferguson's transition to management was marked by a reputation for strict discipline.

He began managing East Stirlingshire in 1974 at age 32. The job was part-time and paid only £40 per week. He soon moved to St Mirren, where he achieved a major transformation. He turned a team in the lower half of the Second Division into First Division champions in 1977. This team was notably young, with an average age of just 19. However, his time at St Mirren ended when the club sacked him. The dismissal involved disputes over contracts and player payments. An industrial tribunal later described his behavior during this time as "petty" and "immature."

In June 1978, Ferguson joined Aberdeen as manager. He faced early challenges with gaining the respect of older players.

However, he eventually built a highly successful era at the club. In the 1979–80 season, Aberdeen won the Scottish league championship. This was a significant achievement because it broke the dominance of Rangers and Celtic. Ferguson also led Aberdeen to major European success. In 1983, the club won both the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. During this period, he was known by the nickname "Furious Fergie" due to his intense personality. He often used a "siege mentality" to unite his players against outside criticism.

Ferguson's arrival at Manchester United changed the course of English football.

He is credited with revolutionizing how the club valued youth development. In the 1990s, he nurtured a group of talented young players known as the "Class of '92." These players helped transform Manchester United into one of the most successful clubs in the world. One notable example of the talent he managed was Cristiano Ronaldo.

In 1999, Ferguson guided the team to a historic continental treble. This meant the club won three major trophies in a single season. This included the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.

By the end of his career, Ferguson had set numerous records. He became the longest-serving manager in Manchester United history. He surpassed the previous record held by Sir Matt Busby on 19 December 2010. He retired at the conclusion of the 2012–13 season. Remarkably, he won the Premier League title in his very final season. His legacy is defined by his ability to build winning teams across different decades. He moved from a shipyard worker's son to a knighted icon of global sport. His career demonstrates how leadership and discipline can reshape an entire institution.
