His journey began with early skill in Glasgow, Scotland. As a boy, he played as a goalkeeper at Miltonbank Primary School. He later won several inter-school competitions with Glasgow Schoolboys. In 1967, he signed a professional contract with Celtic. During his early years, he even worked as an apprentice joiner. He spent time on loan at Cumbernauld United to gain experience. There, he scored 37 goals during his time with the club. He later joined the "Quality Street Gang," a highly rated group of Celtic reserve players.

At Celtic, Dalglish developed into a prolific goal-scorer. He initially played in the midfield before moving into a forward role. This transition helped him score 29 goals in the 1971–72 season. He helped Celtic win four Scottish league championships and several cups. In 1977, he moved to Liverpool for a British transfer record of £440,000.

This move marked the start of a highly successful era in English football. He quickly became a vital part of the Liverpool squad.

His time at Liverpool was defined by incredible teamwork and individual skill. He often played just behind striker Ian Rush in a specialized role. This allowed him to use the extra space to create chances. He won six English league championships while playing for the club. He also secured three European Cups and one European Super Cup. Dalglish was a consistent performer, rarely missing league matches. In 1983, he won the Ballon d'Or Silver Award and the PFA Players' Player of the Year award.

On the international stage, Dalglish represented the Scotland national team with great distinction. He earned 102 caps, which was a record for his country at the time. He also scored 30 goals for Scotland, matching the record set by Denis Law. He was selected for four FIFA World Cup squads between 1974 and 1986. He played in most of these tournaments, though an injury kept him out of the 1986 event. His international career demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest global level.

After retiring as a player, Dalglish moved into football management. He became the player-manager for Liverpool in 1985. During this period, he led the team to win three more First Division titles. He later managed Blackburn Rovers and led them to a Premier League title in 1995. He also held management and director roles at Newcastle United and Celtic.
