At Scunthorpe United, he was known as a "one-hundred percenter" by his coach. He often performed weighted farmers walks up the cantilever stand at the Old Show Ground to build strength. His early years involved significant responsibility, such as driving the team minibus to away games. He also worked summer jobs, like plate-laying at a steelworks, to support himself. This period of hard work helped shape the professional he would become. His dedication to training was a defining characteristic of his early career.

In 1971, Keegan made a major move to Liverpool for a transfer fee of £33,000.
