Gary Lineker is a highly respected English sports broadcaster and former professional footballer. He primarily played as a striker, which is a position focused on scoring goals. Lineker's career was defined by consistent scoring and remarkable discipline. Over a senior career spanning 16 years, he played 654 competitive matches. During these games, he scored a total of 331 goals. Of these, 283 goals were scored at the club level. He also represented the England national team 80 times, earning 80 caps. In those international matches, he scored 48 goals. This made him England's second-highest goalscorer at the time of his retirement. He currently remains England's fourth-highest scorer, following Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney, and Bobby Charlton.

His playing style was noted for its cleanliness and respect for the game. Throughout his entire professional career, Lineker never received a yellow card or a red card. This rare feat earned him the FIFA Fair Play Award in 1990. While he was a prolific scorer, he never won a top-flight league title. However, he achieved significant success in other competitions. He won the FA Cup with Tottenham Hotspur in 1991. He also won the Copa del Rey and the European Cup Winners' Cup while playing in Spain for Barcelona.

Lineker's journey through professional football took him across several different countries. He began his career at his hometown club, Leicester City, in 1978. After helping Leicester earn promotion, he moved to Everton in 1985 for £800,000. At Everton, he scored 40 goals in 57 games during the 1985–86 season. He then moved to Spain to join Barcelona for £2.8 million. His time in Spain included scoring 42 goals in 103 La Liga appearances. He eventually moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 1989 for £1.1 million. He finished his professional career playing for Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan, retiring in 1994.

Before he was a world-famous athlete, Lineker grew up in Leicester. His father, Barry Lineker, was a greengrocer who ran a stall in the Leicester Market. As a child, Gary regularly helped out at the family fruit and vegetable stall. He was a talented multi-sport athlete during his youth. From age 11 to 16, he captained the Leicestershire Schools cricket team. He even believed he had a better chance of succeeding in cricket than in football. One of his teachers once doubted his future, suggesting he would never make a living from football.

Lineker's success on the pitch led to a major second career in media. After retiring from football, he became a prominent sports broadcaster. He joined the BBC, where he became the presenter for the flagship programme Match of the Day. He held this position from 1999 until 2025, which was the longest tenure of any presenter for the show. He also served as the BBC's lead presenter for live international football, including the FIFA World Cup. His media work has extended to other networks like Al Jazeera Sports, NBC Sports Network, and BT Sport.

Beyond his individual achievements, Lineker has remained connected to his roots and his community. He is a keen supporter of Leicester City, the club where his career began. In 2002, he led a consortium that invested in the club. This investment helped save Leicester City from bankruptcy. Because of his support, he was appointed as the club's honorary vice-president. His life represents a full circle, moving from a young boy helping at a local market stall to a global figure in both sport and media.
