She served as a forward for the United States national team from 1987 to 2004. A forward is a player positioned to score goals. Hamm is widely considered one of the most influential female players ever. She earned two Olympic gold medals and two FIFA Women's World Cup championships. Her success helped bring global attention to women's professional sports. She is often called a soccer icon because of her skill and leadership.

Hamm's career began with remarkable speed and talent. She joined the U.S. women's national team in 1987 at age 15. This made her the youngest player to ever represent the team. While playing as a forward, she worked to master both scoring and assisting. An assist occurs when a player passes the ball to a teammate who then scores. Hamm eventually recorded 144 career assists for her country. She also scored a total of 158 international goals before her retirement.

Her college years at the University of North Carolina were highly successful.
