He is widely considered one of the greatest managers in the history of the sport. Busby spent a total of 25 years at Manchester United. During his long tenure, he won 13 different trophies. This included five English league championships and the prestigious European Cup. He was the first manager of an English team to win that major European title. His career is defined by his ability to build teams and his incredible resilience.

Busby's journey began in a small mining village called Orbiston in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He grew up in a two-roomed pitman's cottage. His father, Alexander, was a miner who served in the First World War. Sadly, his father was killed by a sniper during the Battle of Arras in 1917. Despite his family's connection to the coal pits, Busby's true dream was professional football. He worked as a collier, which is a person who works in a coal mine, while playing part-time. Eventually, his talent led him to sign for Manchester City in 1928 for £5 per week.

As a player, Busby developed a reputation for being an intelligent and skillful athlete. He initially played as an inside forward for Manchester City. Later, his manager moved him to the half-back line. In this new role, he became known for his ability to pass the ball with great precision. He made over 200 appearances for Manchester City and won the FA Cup in 1934. In 1936, he moved to Liverpool for a fee of £8,000. At Liverpool, he eventually became the team captain and helped mentor a young player named Bob Paisley.

World War II changed the course of Busby's life and career. He served in the King's Liverpool Regiment and worked as a football coach in the Army Physical Training Corps. During the war, he also played as a guest for several different clubs. After the war, he was offered an assistant coaching job at Liverpool. However, Busby wanted more authority over how a team was run. He wanted to control training, pick the starting players, and manage player transfers. Because Liverpool would not give him this control, he looked elsewhere.

In 1945, Busby accepted the manager's position at Manchester United.

He negotiated a five-year contract to ensure he had enough time to implement his new ideas. He also hired Jimmy Murphy as his chief coach. Together, they began a revolution at the club. Instead of spending large sums of money on famous, older players, Busby took a different path. He focused on finding and developing very young talent. This strategy resulted in the creation of a famous group of players known as the "Busby Babes."

These young players were incredibly talented and brought excitement to the English league.

One notable player was Duncan Edwards, who became an England international at only 17 years old. This record for the youngest full international stood for over 40 years. Tragically, the team faced a massive setback when eight of these players died in the Munich air disaster. This was a period of immense sorrow for the club and the sport. However, Busby showed incredible strength by rebuilding the team from the ground up.

Busby's leadership after the tragedy remains one of the most significant parts of his legacy. He did not let the disaster end his mission. He successfully led Manchester United to more league titles and domestic cups. A decade after the accident, he achieved the ultimate goal by winning the European Cup. His life came full circle from a small Scottish village to the highest levels of international sport.
