He was known for being a very fierce competitor on the field. Peter was a very tall man with a large frame. He even had to wear specially-made XXXL football shirts to fit. He was a loud leader who often shouted at his defenders. He did this to help them avoid making mistakes. Most goalkeepers only try to stop goals from being scored. However, Peter was different because he scored 11 goals in his career. He was even the first goalkeeper to score in the English Premier League.

His journey to the top was not easy or fast. Before he was a professional, Peter worked many different jobs. He worked in a textile factory dyeing department for a time. He also spent 12 months working as a cleaner. Later, he had an office job with the World Wildlife Fund. He even worked for a flooring company owned by his father-in-law. He found that his knees could not handle standing all day. Eventually, an advertising firm offered him a job. This was his last job before he joined the Brøndby team.

Peter's professional career began in Denmark with his local clubs. He started playing matches when he was only eight years old. He played for teams like Gladsaxe-Hero and Hvidovre. At Gladsaxe-Hero, he met his first mentor, Svend Aage Hansen. Hansen was a coach and later became Peter's father-in-law. Later, Peter joined Brøndby and won the league four times. In the 1990–91 season, he helped them reach a major semi-final. He kept seven clean sheets, which means the other team scored zero. This success helped him get noticed by big clubs abroad.

In 1991, Manchester United signed Peter for £505,000. His manager called this price a huge bargain.

During his eight seasons there, he won 15 trophies. He won five Premier League titles and three FA Cups. In 1999, he captained the team to a massive treble. This means they won the league, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. He was voted the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper in 1992 and 1993. People even voted him the best goalkeeper in history in 2001. He was a true star of the English game.

Soccer talent seems to run in Peter's family. His son, Kasper Schmeichel, is also a professional goalkeeper. Kasper has played for the Danish national team and the club Celtic. Peter also represented Denmark in 129 different matches. He helped his country win the UEFA European Championship in 1992. He played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup as well. His career lasted from 1981 all the way until 2003. He won 24 trophies across all the teams he played for. His impact on the sport is still remembered today.
