Many people call him one of the greatest players of all time. He was famous for his amazing skill with the ball. Fans gave him nicknames like "The Wizard of Dribble" and "The Magician." Matthews worked very hard to become a master of the game. As a young boy, he practiced dribbling around kitchen chairs in his backyard. He used a special technique to move past defenders. Instead of waiting for a defender to move, he would use a deft swerve to go around them. This new way of playing worked very well. He even used a body swerve to trick other players. His training was very intense and helped him stay fit for a long time. He played at the highest level until he was 50 years old.

His journey began in a small house in Hanley, Staffordshire. His father, Jack Matthews, was a local boxer. Jack wanted Stanley to be a boxer, too. However, Stanley decided at age 13 that he wanted to play football. He joined Stoke City as an office boy on his 15th birthday. He earned one pound a week at that time. Later, he signed as a professional on his 17th birthday. He earned five pounds a week, which was the maximum wage then.

Even after he stopped playing, Matthews stayed busy with football. He served in the Royal Air Force during the war. Later, he worked as a manager for Port Vale. He also traveled the world to coach amateur players. In 1975, he went to South Africa to coach. Despite the harsh apartheid laws there, he started an all-black team in Soweto. It was called "Stan's Men."
