Because of his talent, he won the Ballon d'Or award. He was also the very first person to be named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991.

On the field, Matthäus was known for his smart way of playing. Most of his career was spent as a box-to-box midfielder. This means he ran between both ends of the field to help his team. Later in his career, he played as a sweeper to defend the goal. He was very good at reading the game to see what would happen next. He could score important goals using penalties, too. In the 1990 World Cup, he scored four goals to help his team win. He even scored a winning goal against Morocco in the 1986 World Cup.

Matthäus has a very long and impressive history in professional soccer. He was born on March 21, 1961, in Erlangen, Germany. He started his professional journey in 1979 with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Later, he played for the famous club Bayern Munich from 1984 to 1988. He also played in Italy for Inter Milan starting in 1988. During his time in Italy, he helped his team win the UEFA Cup in 1991. He even moved to the United States to play for the MetroStars in 2000.

He is one of only six men to ever reach this milestone. He also earned 150 caps, which means he played 150 times for his country. This makes him the most capped German player of all time. He also won the UEFA Euro 1980 championship. In 1999, even at age 38, he was voted German Footballer of the Year.

Many legends of the game respect what Matthäus achieved. The famous player Diego Maradona once called him his best rival.

This shows how much skill Matthäus had against the best in the world. Pelé even included him on the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players. After he stopped playing professionally, he became a coach for teams like Rapid Wien and Partizan. He even returned to his very first youth club for one final game in 2018. It was a special moment because it was his lifelong dream to finish his career there.
