He is widely recognized as one of the greatest strikers in the history of the sport. A striker is a player whose main job is to score goals. Romário was famous for his clinical finishing, meaning he was extremely accurate when shooting. He was a master of the penalty area, which is the rectangular box near the goal. Because of his low center of gravity, he could move with rapid speed over short distances. This allowed him to evade defenders easily. He often used a trademark toe poke, a technique where the player strikes the ball with the tip of their toe, to score.

His ability to score was driven by immense self-confidence and a calm manner. His former coach at PSV Eindhoven, Guus Hiddink, noted Romário's unswerving belief in his own success. Romário would often tell his coaches that he would score and win the game. According to Hiddink, this prediction was correct eight out of ten times. This confidence helped him achieve incredible statistics throughout his career. He scored over 700 goals for his clubs and his national team. He is also one of only five players to have scored 100 goals with three different clubs.

Romário's professional journey began in the Rio de Janeiro suburbs. He first played for a small club called Olaria during his childhood. He later joined the junior team at Vasco da Gama, where he won state league titles in 1987 and 1988. He gained international attention after becoming the top scorer at the 1988 Olympic football tournament. In 1988, he moved to the Netherlands to join PSV Eindhoven. During five seasons at PSV, he helped the club win the Eredivisie, the Dutch league, three times. His scoring record at the club was remarkable, with 165 goals in 167 games.

In 1993, Romário moved to Spain to play for Barcelona. He became a vital part of Johan Cruyff's "Dream Team." This group included famous players like Hristo Stoichkov, Michael Laudrup, and Ronald Koeman. During his first season, he won La Liga and finished as the top scorer with 30 goals in 33 matches. One of his most famous moments was scoring a hat-trick against Real Madrid in the El Clásico. He also had notable performances in the UEFA Champions League, including scoring against Manchester United. In 1994, he was named the FIFA World Player of the Year.

For his incredible performance, he received the Golden Ball, which is awarded to the best player of the tournament. Romário's career also included stints at clubs like Flamengo, Valencia, and Fluminense. He played in various parts of the world, including Qatar, the United States, and Australia. In 2007, while playing for Vasco da Gama, he reached a massive milestone by scoring his 1,000th professional goal.

Romário's statistical impact on football is immense. He is the ninth-highest goalscorer in the history of football, with 784 goals in 1,002 official games.
