Hristo Stoichkov is a legendary Bulgarian professional footballer. He is widely considered the greatest player in Bulgaria's history. Throughout his career, he was a prolific forward known for scoring many goals. He earned several prestigious honors for his skill on the pitch. In 1994, he won the Ballon d'Or, an award for the best player in Europe. He also received the World Cup Golden Boot for his performance in 1994. Pelé, one of the greatest players ever, included him in the FIFA 100 list in 2004.

Stoichkov's style of play was defined by explosive power and technical skill. He was a left-footed forward who could play as a striker or a winger. He possessed incredible acceleration, which allowed him to dribble past defenders at high speeds. His shots on goal were often unpredictable and very powerful. He was also a master of set pieces, including free kicks and penalties. Beyond scoring, he was a creative player who provided many assists for his teammates. This versatility made him a vital part of every team he joined.

His professional journey began in his hometown of Plovdiv with Maritsa Plovdiv. At age 11, he started his career with this local club. In 1982, he moved to Hebros Harmanli, where he scored 14 goals. He later joined CSKA Sofia in 1985, where he spent six years. During the 1989–90 season at CSKA, he scored 38 goals in 30 matches. This incredible feat earned him the European Golden Shoe. His success in Bulgaria eventually led him to the Spanish club Barcelona in 1990.

At Barcelona, Stoichkov became an international superstar. He was a key member of manager Johan Cruyff's famous "Dream Team." This group achieved massive success, winning four consecutive La Liga titles from 1991 to 1994. They also won the European Cup in 1992 after defeating Sampdoria in the final. In Spain, fans gave him the nickname "El Pistolero." He formed a highly successful attacking partnership with the Brazilian player Romário. Stoichkov was even known for helping Romário stay disciplined by ensuring he arrived at training on time.

Stoichkov's impact on the Bulgaria national team was historic. He led the team to a fourth-place finish at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. During that tournament, he scored six goals and earned the Bronze Ball award. This meant he was ranked as the third-best player in the entire tournament. He also helped Bulgaria qualify for the 1996 European Championship by scoring ten goals in qualifying. He retired from international football in 1999 with 37 goals in 83 appearances. His legacy remains a central part of Bulgarian sporting pride.

Despite his talent, Stoichkov was often famous for his fiery temperament. He was a highly aggressive player who frequently argued with referees and opponents. In 1985, a fight during a cup final resulted in a one-year suspension. Later, in 2003, a violent tackle during a match for D.C. United led to a lawsuit. An American University student suffered a broken leg during the incident. Major League Soccer investigated and issued Stoichkov a two-game suspension and a $2,000 fine. These moments showed the intense, sometimes difficult, nature of his competitive spirit.

After retiring from play, Stoichkov transitioned into coaching and media. He served as the manager of the Bulgaria national team from 2004 to 2007. His coaching style was also very intense and often caused conflict. Some players even left the national team because of disagreements with him. He also held managerial roles at Celta Vigo in Spain and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa. In 2011, he was invited to lead the Vietnam national team but declined. Today, he shares his expertise as a football commentator for TUDN.
