He was a striker, a player whose primary role is to score goals. Because of his incredible scoring ability, fans gave him nicknames like "Batigol" and "El Ángel Gabriel," which means Angel Gabriel. Many experts consider him one of the greatest strikers in the history of the sport. In 2004, the famous player Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list. This list honors the world's greatest living players. Batistuta's career was defined by immense power and a constant drive to score more goals.

His journey began in Argentina, where he initially preferred sports like basketball. After seeing Mario Kempes play in the 1978 FIFA World Cup, he turned his focus to football. He started with local teams before joining Newell's Old Boys in 1988. His early years were difficult because he lived away from his family and struggled with his weight. However, his coach Marcelo Bielsa transformed him through intense training. Bielsa taught him how to train even on rainy days. This guidance helped Batistuta become the professional athlete the world would soon know.

Batistuta moved through several major Argentine clubs, including River Plate and Boca Juniors. At River Plate, he helped the team win the Argentine Primera División in 1990. Later, at Boca Juniors, manager Óscar Tabárez moved him to the center of attack. This position allowed him to find his best form. He finished the 1991 season as the league's top scorer. These early successes prepared him for his long and famous career in Italy.

Most of his professional success occurred while playing in Italy's Serie A league. He spent many years with the club Fiorentina, where he became a true icon. He scored 151 goals for the club in Serie A, making him their all-time top scorer. Even when Fiorentina was relegated to Serie B in 1993, Batistuta stayed to help them return to the top league. The fans in Florence loved him so much that they built a life-size bronze statue of him in 1996. He also helped the club win the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.

In 2000, Batistuta moved to the club Roma in a massive transfer deal. The fee was €36 million, which was the highest price ever paid for a player over age 30 until 2018. This move was successful because he finally won the Serie A title during the 2000–01 season. He later had a brief loan spell with Inter Milan in 2003. He finished his professional career playing for Al-Arabi in Qatar before retiring in 2005. His career spanned several countries and many different levels of competition.

For the Argentina national team, Batistuta was a prolific scorer. He scored 56 goals in 78 official matches for his country. This was a national record that stood until Lionel Messi surpassed it in 2016. He also scored 10 goals across three FIFA World Cups. He is the only player in history to score two hat-tricks in different World Cups. A hat-trick is when a player scores three goals in a single match. He also won two consecutive Copa América titles in 1991 and 1993.

While his career was glorious, the physical toll on his body was very high. The intense stress of professional football caused severe damage to his ankles. He has faced significant mobility issues and difficulty walking since retiring. He has even described experiencing intense pain that made it hard to move. Despite these challenges, he remains active through golf and polo. He also runs a construction company in Argentina. He views his career with satisfaction, even though he once said he felt he was never truly happy while playing because he always wanted more goals.
