He played as a right-back, a defensive position on the side of the pitch. Cafu is celebrated as one of the greatest full-backs in the history of the sport. He was famous for his incredible pace and high energy. He often made attacking runs along the right flank to help his team. This style of play helped change how the position is played today.

Many modern players now follow the example he set.

Cafu's playing style required immense stamina and tactical versatility. He functioned as an attacking full-back, which was a relatively new concept during his era. He would sprint down the wing to provide accurate crosses to his teammates in the penalty area. Because of his constant, rapid movement, fans in Italy gave him a special nickname. They called him "Il Pendolino," which means "The Express Train" or "The Commuter." While he usually played on the flank, he could also play as a centre-back or a winger. This flexibility made him a vital asset to every team he joined.

His journey to greatness began in the Jardim Irene favela in São Paulo.

He was one of six children in his family. As a young boy, he attended a football academy and played for several junior sides. He also played futsal, a type of indoor football, for two years. His early path was not easy, as he was rejected by several major youth squads. However, he joined the youth squad at São Paulo in 1988. It was there that his mentor, coach Telê Santana, helped him transition from right midfield to wingback. This change allowed him to flourish as a professional.

Cafu's club career spanned several major leagues across Brazil, Spain, and Italy.

He began his professional rise at São Paulo, winning the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1992 and 1993. He later played for Real Zaragoza in Spain, where he won the 1995 Cup Winners' Cup. His move to Italy saw him join Roma in 1997, where he won the Scudetto, the Italian league title, in 2001. He then moved to AC Milan, where he won another Scudetto in 2004 and the UEFA Champions League in 2007. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup during his time with the Rossoneri.

On the international stage, Cafu achieved unprecedented success with the Brazil national team. He holds the record for the most appearances for Brazil, with 142 total caps. He represented his country in four FIFA World Cups between 1994 and 2006. Cafu is the only player in history to appear in three World Cup finals. He also won two of those trophies, in 1994 and 2002. In the 2002 tournament, he served as the team captain. During the victory celebration, he famously shouted "Regina, eu te amo!" to his wife.

Beyond the World Cup, Cafu won many other prestigious titles. He won the Copa América twice, in 1997 and 1999. He also won the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup with Brazil. His individual skill earned him many honors, including being named South American Footballer of the Year in 1994. In 2004, Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players. He was also named to the FIFPro World XI in 2005. In 2020, he was recognized in the Ballon d'Or Dream Team.

Despite his triumphs, Cafu faced challenges and controversies during his career. He was once accused of using a forged passport to help players meet roster rules in Italy. However, the Italian Football Federation cleared him, finding his passport was real. He also faced legal scrutiny regarding his wife's nationality, but they were acquitted of all charges in 2006. Even in his later years, he faced criticism when Brazil exited the 2006 World Cup. Nevertheless, his legacy remains secure through his induction into the AC Milan and Roma Halls of Fame.
