He is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Maldini spent his entire 25-season playing career with one club, AC Milan. He primarily played as a left-back or a centre-back. Because of his long-standing leadership, he earned the nickname "Il Capitano," which means "The Captain."

As a defender, Maldini's primary role was to protect his team's goal. He was highly versatile and skilled with both of his feet. This allowed him to play effectively on both the left and right sides of the defense. During his career, he played 902 matches for AC Milan. He also earned 126 caps for the Italy national team.

His defensive skill helped him win many individual honors. He received the Serie A Defender of the Year Award in 2004. He also won the Best Defender award at the UEFA Club Football Awards at age 39.

Maldini's career can be divided into distinct eras of success. His early years began in the Milan youth academy. He joined the academy in 1978 at age 10. He initially played as a right midfielder or winger in a 4–4–2 formation. At age 14, he transitioned to a right full-back position. He made his professional league debut for Milan on 20 January 1985. He was only 16 years old at the time.

His middle career was marked by dominance with legendary squads. Under manager Arrigo Sacchi, he was part of a team nicknamed "The Immortals." This squad included famous players like Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit. Later, under Fabio Capello, he was part of "The Invincibles." This Milan team set an Italian record by going 58 league matches without a loss. During this era, Maldini helped win several Serie A titles and European Cup trophies.

In his later years, Maldini assumed the captaincy of AC Milan. He led the club through difficult periods of managerial changes. Despite these struggles, he helped lead Milan to the 1998–99 Serie A title. He also captained the team to a Champions League victory in 2003. This victory was special because it was an all-Italian final against Juventus. Maldini was named Man of the Match during that final. He retired from professional football in 2009 at the age of 41.

Maldini's trophy cabinet is one of the most impressive in football history. He won 26 trophies with AC Milan. These include five UEFA Champions League titles and seven Serie A titles. He also won five Supercoppa Italiana titles and five European/UEFA Super Cups. His international career with Italy included four FIFA World Cups. He reached the final of the 1994 World Cup and the Euro 2000 championship.

He was also named to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002.

His legacy is deeply connected to his family and the history of the sport. His father, Cesare Maldini, was also a great captain for AC Milan. In 2003, Paolo lifted the European Cup as captain. This occurred exactly 40 years after his father did the same in England. They are one of only three father-son pairs to achieve this feat. To honor his incredible loyalty and skill, AC Milan retired his number 3 shirt. This means no other player at the club will wear that number again.
