He was a famous defender for the Italian team AC Milan. Because he was a great leader, people called him "Il Capitano," which means "The Captain." He spent his whole 25-year career playing for Milan in the Italian league, called Serie A. He was a very loyal player who only played for one club. Even after he stopped playing, he worked as a sporting director for Milan.

As a defender, Maldini's job was to stop the other team from scoring. He could play on the left side or in the middle of the defense. He was very good with both of his feet. This skill helped him become a great left-back or centre-back. He helped his team win 26 different trophies during his time with Milan. These wins included five European Cup titles and seven Serie A titles.

Maldini started his journey very young. When he was 10 years old, he had his first tryout for the Milan youth academy. Before that, he only played soccer on the streets. He started as a midfielder before moving to a defender role at age 14. He made his professional debut in 1985 when he was only 16 years old. He wore the number 3 shirt, which was the same number his father, Cesare, had worn.

His career was full of big records and amazing moments. He played 902 games for Milan, which is a huge number. He also played 126 times for the Italy national team. Maldini was part of a famous Milan team called "The Invincibles." That team went 58 matches without losing a single game. He also reached the final of the 1994 World Cup with Italy.

Maldini's success connects him to his family and soccer history. His father, Cesare, was also a great captain for Milan. In 2003, Paolo lifted the European Cup as captain. This happened exactly 40 years after his father did the same thing. They are one of only three father and son pairs to do this. To honor his amazing career, Milan retired his number 3 shirt so no one else will wear it.
