Arrigo Sacchi

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Arrigo Sacchi is one of the most famous soccer coaches in history. He was born on April 1, 1946, in Italy. Unlike many great coaches, he was never a professional player. For many years, he actually worked as a shoe salesman. Some people doubted him because he had not played at a high level. Sacchi famously replied that you do not have to be a horse to become a jockey. This meant he could lead others even if he was not a star player himself.

Sacchi changed how soccer teams work together on the field. He used a special training method called "shadow play." In this drill, players move around the field without a ball. They practice moving as one single unit to perfect their positions. He also used a "high defensive line." This kept his players close together, with no more than 25 meters between the defense and the attack. He wanted every player to be able to do many different jobs on the field. This idea is related to a style called "Total Football."

His coaching journey began at small local clubs. He started at Baracca Lugo and later coached at Bellaria and Cesena. He also worked with youth teams at Fiorentina and Rimini. His big break came when he joined Parma. At Parma, he led the team to promotion and had great success in the Coppa Italia. He even beat the famous AC Milan during his time there. These wins caught the eye of Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi was the owner of AC Milan and hired Sacchi to be their manager.

At AC Milan, Sacchi achieved incredible things. In his first season, he won the Serie A title in 1987–88. He also won the Supercoppa Italiana in 1988. Most impressively, he won two European Cups in a row in 1989 and 1990. His 1989 win against Steaua București ended a 20-year wait for the club. He also led the Italy national team to the 1994 FIFA World Cup final. Italy lost that final to Brazil in a penalty shoot-out. This was the first time a World Cup final ever used a shoot-out.

Many modern coaches study Sacchi to learn how to win. He is known as "The Prophet of Fusignano" because of his great ideas. His style of "high pressing" is used by famous managers today like Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp. He believed that a team must speak the same language to succeed. He once said that the spirit guides the hand. Even though he had disagreements with some players, his impact on the game was huge. He is often ranked among the greatest managers of all time.
