He played as a right-back, which is a defensive position near the side of the field. Most defenders stay back to protect the goal, but Cafu was different. He used his great speed and energy to run far up the field to help his team score. This style of attacking play was very new at the time. Today, many famous players follow the path he helped create. He was known for his skill, his leadership, and his very cheerful personality.

He would make long runs down the right flank to send accurate crosses to his teammates. Because he moved so fast and constantly, fans in Italy gave him a special nickname. They called him "Il Pendolino," which means "The Express Train." He was also very smart on the field. While he mostly played as an attacking right-back, he could also play as a center-back or a winger. This meant he could adapt to almost any part of the game.

Cafu's journey began in a place called Jardim Irene in São Paulo.

He was one of six children in his family. As a young boy, he attended a soccer academy and played in junior teams. He even played futsal, which is a type of indoor soccer, for two years. He faced some hard times early on when several big teams rejected him. However, he did not give up. In 1988, he joined the youth squad at his hometown club, São Paulo. His coach, Telê Santana, helped him move from a midfield role to his famous wingback position.

His professional career took him all over the world. He played for São Paulo in Brazil from 1989 to 1995. After that, he played for Real Zaragoza in Spain and Juventude in Brazil. He then moved to Italy to play for Roma from 1997 to 2003. Later, he joined AC Milan, where he won more titles. He was a huge success for the Brazil national team, too. He played in 142 matches for his country. This made him the player with the most appearances for Brazil in history.

Cafu is most famous for his amazing record in the FIFA World Cup. He is the only player ever to play in three World Cup finals. He won the trophy twice, in 1994 and 2002. In the 2002 tournament, he was the captain of the team. When Brazil won, he lifted the trophy and shouted to his wife, "Regina, eu te amo!" He also won the Copa América twice in 1997 and 1999. His many awards, like being named South American Footballer of the Year, show how much people respect his talent.
