He is widely recognized as one of the greatest football managers in history. In Italy, he is affectionately called "Carletto," while in Spain, he is known as "Don Carlo." Ancelotti holds a unique record in the UEFA Champions League. He has won this prestigious tournament five times as a manager. He is also the only manager to have participated in six different Champions League finals. His success extends across the continent, as he is the only manager to win league titles in all of Europe's top five leagues.

As a player, Ancelotti was a skilled midfielder known for his leadership and creativity. He lacked extreme pace or physical strength, but he made up for it with technical ability. He possessed excellent tactical intelligence and a wide passing range. One of his most notable skills was his ability to score powerful, accurate shots from outside the penalty box. He was a versatile player who could function as a deep-lying playmaker or a defensive midfielder. In these roles, he would win the ball and set the tempo for his team's play. He eventually served as a mentor to younger players like Demetrio Albertini and Andrea Pirlo during his time at AC Milan.

Ancelotti's professional playing career began in 1974 with the Italian club Parma. He made his professional debut in Serie C during the 1976–77 season at age 18. Playing as an attacking midfielder or second striker, he helped Parma earn promotion to Serie B. He achieved this by scoring two goals in a decisive 3–1 victory against Triestina in Vicenza. In 1979, he transferred to Roma, where he became a central figure for eight seasons.

During his time in Rome, he won four Coppa Italia titles and the Italian championship in 1983. He also served as team captain in 1985 under manager Sven-Göran Eriksson.

From 1987 to 1992, Ancelotti played for AC Milan during a highly successful era. Under manager Arrigo Sacchi, the team won the Serie A title in 1988 and consecutive European Cups in 1989 and 1990.

A standout moment occurred in 1989 during a 5–0 victory over Real Madrid, where Ancelotti dribbled past two defenders to score a long-range goal. He also helped Milan win the 1991–92 Serie A title, which they achieved without losing a single match. However, persistent knee injuries eventually forced him into retirement in 1992 at the age of 33.

Ancelotti transitioned to management after studying coaching at Coverciano. He began his managerial career with Reggiana in the 1995–96 season, helping them achieve promotion to Serie A. He then moved to Parma, where he implemented a strict 4–4–2 tactical formation.

This system led Parma to a second-place finish in Serie A during the 1996–97 season. Ancelotti later managed Juventus before joining AC Milan as a manager in 2001. At Milan, he won the Champions League in 2003 and 2007. He also led the club to a Scudetto in the 2003–04 season, setting an Italian record with 82 points.

His managerial journey has taken him to many of Europe's most famous clubs. In 2009, he joined Chelsea and won both the Premier League and the FA Cup in his first season.

Ancelotti has had two separate stints at Real Madrid. During these times, he led the club to multiple La Liga titles and several Champions League trophies, including a "decima" or tenth title in his first season.

Ancelotti's career is defined by his ability to win across different leagues and cultures. He has won the FIFA Club World Cup three times and the UEFA Super Cup five times, which is a record for a manager. In 2025, he reached a new milestone by being appointed as the coach of the Brazil national team. This appointment marks his first time managing a national team. His career shows a continuous evolution from a creative midfielder to one of the most successful tactical leaders in the history of the sport.
