This venue was built by the club's second chairman, Piero Pirelli. It is the largest stadium in Italian football, with a capacity of 75,817 people. Since 1947, Milan has shared this stadium with its local rival, Inter Milan.

When these two teams meet, the match is called the Derby della Madonnina. This rivalry is one of the most followed in the entire sport.

The club's history is divided into several distinct eras of growth and change. It began in 1899 when an English expatriate named Herbert Kilpin founded the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club.

Kilpin chose the English spelling for the city's name. The club won its first Italian championship in 1901.

In 1908, an internal disagreement occurred regarding the signing of foreign players. This split led to the formation of F.C. Internazionale, the club's future rival.

After a period of rebuilding, the 1950s brought a return to domestic dominance. The club featured a famous Swedish trio known as Gre-No-Li, consisting of Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl, and Nils Liedholm.

During this decade, Milan won the Scudetto, or league title, four times. The club also began to find success in Europe. They were the first Italian club to participate in the European Cup during the 1955–56 season. They also won the Latin Cup in 1951 and 1956.

A massive transformation occurred when Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club in 1986.

He invested significant funds to save the club from bankruptcy. Under his 31-year presidency, Milan became a global powerhouse. He appointed manager Arrigo Sacchi, who brought in talented players like Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten, and Frank Rijkaard. This era produced the "Immortals," a team voted by experts as the best club side of all time. The club also saw success under manager Fabio Capello, whose team earned the nickname "the Invincibles" after a 58-match unbeaten run.

The club's trophy cabinet contains impressive numbers that define its legacy. Domestically, Milan has won 19 league titles, 5 Coppa Italia trophies, and 8 Supercoppa Italiana titles.

In international play, they are Italy's most successful club. They have won seven European Cup/Champions League titles. This makes them the second-most successful team in that specific competition, trailing only Real Madrid. They also hold records for the Latin Cup and have won three Intercontinental Cups.

Individual excellence has also been a hallmark of the club. Milan has been home to many Ballon d'Or winners, which is a prestigious award for the best player. In 1988, three Milan players—Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard—all finished on the top three spots of the Ballon d'Or podium.
