Most people call the team Internazionale or simply Inter. In English-speaking countries, the club is commonly known as Inter Milan. The club is based in Milan, which is in the Lombardy region. Inter is unique in Italian football history. It is the only team to have always played in the top division since its debut in 1909. The club has never been relegated to the lower Serie B league. Since 1947, Inter has shared the San Siro stadium with its rival, AC Milan.

The club began because of a disagreement over who could play.

In March 1908, a group of players left the Milan Cricket and Football Club. They wanted to form a new club that could accept foreign players. The name Internazionale reflects this desire for international inclusion. The club won its first championship in 1910. During the Fascist era, the club underwent several name changes. For political reasons, it was renamed Società Sportiva Ambrosiana. During the 1928–29 season, the team wore white jerseys with a red cross. This design was inspired by the flag of Milan. Eventually, the club returned to its traditional black-and-blue colors.

Many legendary players helped define the club's identity.

Giuseppe Meazza was one of the greatest Italian players of all time. He scored 284 goals for Inter. He holds the club record for 38 goals in a single season. The San Siro stadium was officially named after him following his death in 1980. In the 1930s, many South American players joined the team. They arrived to help circumvent rules that prohibited hiring foreign players. These players included Uruguayans like Hector Scarone and Argentinians like Attilio Demaría. Such talent helped Inter win championships in 1930 and 1938. Armando Castellazzi became the youngest coach to win a national title at age 33.

A major era known as "La Grande Inter" occurred in the 1960s.

Manager Helenio Herrera led this highly successful period. Herrera was nicknamed "il Mago," which means "the Wizard." He transformed the team using a tactical system called the "Verrou." This system is also known as a door bolt. It was a modification of a system created by Karl Rappan. Herrera added a fifth defender called a sweeper or libero. The sweeper acted as a free man behind the two center backs. This player helped defend against attackers who broke through the main line.

This tactical shift led to massive international success.

Inter also became club world champions by winning the Intercontinental Cup. This was the first time an Italian club won that trophy. The core of this legendary team included players like Giacinto Facchetti and Luis Suárez. They were known for their ability to perform powerful counterattacks. This era established Inter as a leading force in European football.

The club's trophy cabinet is very large.
