It is one of the most successful and decorated clubs in the history of the sport. The club competes in La Liga, which is the top tier of Spanish football. Real Madrid is recognized as the greatest football club of the 20th century. In 2004, it received the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit to honor this status.

The club is also a massive global brand. In 2024, it was estimated to be worth $6.6 billion. This makes it the most valuable football club in the world. It also became the first football club to generate €1 billion in revenue in 2024.

The club operates through a unique ownership structure. Unlike most European sporting clubs, Real Madrid is owned and operated by its members. This means the supporters have a direct role in the club's governance. To build their teams, the club uses two distinct methods. One method is the "Galácticos" policy, which involves signing the world's most famous superstars. This policy brought players like Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham to Madrid.

The second method is the use of its youth academy, known as La Fábrica. This academy develops homegrown talent through intense training. It has produced famous graduates such as Raúl, Iker Casillas, and Dani Carvajal. This system ensures a steady supply of players to Europe's top five leagues.

Real Madrid's history began with the introduction of football to Madrid by academics. These individuals included graduates from Cambridge and Oxford University. They originally formed a group called Sky Football in 1897. Due to internal conflicts, some members left to create the Nueva Sociedad de Football. This led to the official founding of Madrid Football Club on March 6, 1902.

The Padrós brothers helped organize the club in the back room of their family business. They chose a white home kit to honor the English team Corinthian. In 1920, King Alfonso XIII bestowed the honorific title "Real," which means "Royal" in Spanish.

This changed the club's name to Real Madrid.

The club experienced massive growth and success under the presidency of Santiago Bernabéu. He took office in 1943 and oversaw the rebuilding of the club after the Spanish Civil War. Bernabéu managed the construction of the club's current home, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

He also oversaw the creation of the club's training facilities, Ciudad Deportiva. During the 1950s and 1960s, the club became a dominant force in European football. This era was defined by winning five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960. This legendary team included players like Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás.

Real Madrid holds numerous records in both domestic and international competitions. In Spanish football, the club has won 71 trophies. This includes a record 36 La Liga titles and 20 Copa del Rey titles.

On the international stage, the club has won 35 trophies. Most notably, they hold a record 15 UEFA Champions League titles. In 2024, they won their 15th title, which was their sixth in eleven seasons.

They are also the only club to win three consecutive Champions League titles twice. They achieved this feat in the 1956–58 period and again in 2016–18.

One of the most famous eras in the club's history was the "Yé-yé" generation. This team won the European Cup in 1966. It was composed entirely of players of the same nationality. The name came from the chorus of a Beatles song.

Another era of brilliance involved the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. The club paid a record-breaking £80 million for him from Manchester United.

Ronaldo went on to become the all-time top goal-scorer for the club. These individual successes have helped maintain the club's status as a global leader.

Finally, Real Madrid is defined by its intense sporting rivalries. The club is a founding member of La Liga and has never been relegated. This longevity has fueled famous matches like "El Clásico" against Barcelona.

They also participate in "El Derbi Madrileño" against Atlético Madrid.

These rivalries are deeply rooted in Spanish history and culture. The club's success in these matches connects it to the broader landscape of European sports. Through its academy, its superstar signings, and its massive trophy cabinet, Real Madrid remains a central figure in football history.
