He primarily played as a winger, a position located near the sidelines of the pitch. Figo is widely considered one of the greatest wingers in the history of the sport. He was a central figure in the "Golden Generation" of Portuguese football. His career spanned several of the world's most prestigious clubs. He played for Sporting CP, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan.

Beyond his club success, he was a vital leader for the Portugal national team.

Figo's technical skill was shaped by diverse playing environments. He began his journey as a street footballer in Cova da Piedade. He later joined the Sporting CP academy at age 12. During his youth, he played futsal, which is a version of football played on a smaller court. This experience helped him develop specific skills used later in his professional career. He made his professional league debut for Sporting CP on April 2, 1990. He quickly transitioned from a promising youth player to a senior international star.

His career was defined by massive transfers and intense club rivalries. In 1995, he moved to Barcelona for a fee of £2.25 million. He became a star in Spain, winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1997. However, his most famous move occurred in July 2000. He transferred from Barcelona to their bitter rivals, Real Madrid. This move involved a buyout clause of €62 million. This amount set a new world record fee at the time.

This transfer also launched the "Galáctico" era at Real Madrid.

This transfer created immense tension between the two Spanish clubs. Barcelona fans felt deeply betrayed by Figo's decision to join their rivals. When he returned to Barcelona's stadium, the Camp Nou, the atmosphere was incredibly intense. In October 2000, nearly 98,000 fans jeered him constantly. They threw various objects, including bottles, lighters, and even a pig's head onto the pitch.

During a match in 2002, the referee had to suspend play for 20 minutes due to flying missiles. Despite this hostility, Figo remained a top-tier performer for Real Madrid.

Figo achieved remarkable individual and team success throughout his career. He won the 2000 Ballon d'Or, which honors the best player in the world. He also earned the 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year award. In 2004, Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players. His trophy cabinet is extensive and includes many major titles. He won four La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid. He also secured four Serie A titles and one Italian Cup during his time with Inter Milan.

His impact on the Portugal national team was equally significant. He earned 127 caps for his country, which was a one-time record. Figo scored 32 goals during his international career. He represented Portugal in three European Championships and two World Cups. He helped the team reach the final of Euro 2004, where they finished as runners-up. He also helped the squad reach the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup. His leadership was evident when he captained the side during many important matches.

Figo eventually moved to Italy to play for Inter Milan in 2005. He spent four seasons there, playing under manager José Mourinho. He announced his retirement from professional football in April 2013. His final match took place on May 31, 2009, against Atalanta. At the request of teammate Javier Zanetti, he captained Inter Milan for his very last game. He received a standing ovation from the crowd as he left the pitch.

Figo's career remains a study in elite skill and the intense emotions of global sports.
