Schmidt primarily played as a power forward or a small forward. He stood 2.06 meters tall and weighed 109 kilograms. For many years, he was considered the all-time leading scorer in basketball history. He recorded 49,973 career points through professional club leagues and senior Brazilian national team play. This massive total remained a record until LeBron James surpassed it on April 2, 2024.

Schmidt's scoring mechanism relied on incredible consistency and range. He was a master of the three-point field goal, a long-distance shot. In a 1994 game against Murcia in the Spanish league, he successfully made 11 three-point shots. During the 1994–95 season with Fórum Valladolid, he averaged 24.0 points per game. He once scored 47 points in a single game against Málaga. In that performance, he was perfect from long range, making all 8 of his three-point attempts. His ability to score from many positions made him a constant threat to any defense.

His professional career can be divided into several distinct international stages. He began in Brazil, playing for clubs like S.E. Palmeiras and E.C. Sírio. In 1974, he started his professional journey at only 16 years old. He later moved to Europe to play in the Italian and Spanish leagues. In Italy, he played for JuveCaserta and Pavia. He also played for Fórum Valladolid in Spain. Each of these stages allowed him to showcase his talent against different styles of play and top-tier competition.

Schmidt's journey through the basketball world is marked by significant historical milestones. He was born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, in 1958. In 1984, the New Jersey Nets drafted him in the sixth round of the NBA draft. However, he declined a guaranteed contract from the team. He chose to play in Italy because it paid more than the NBA offer at that time. He also wanted to continue playing for the Brazilian national team. Until 1989, NBA players were not permitted to play for their national teams.

His statistical significance is reflected in numerous records and honors. Schmidt holds the record for the longest professional career span at 29 years. He was the top scorer in the history of the Summer Olympic Games. He also holds the top scoring record for the FIBA World Cup. In the Italian First Division, he was the top scorer seven different times. His scoring averages were often massive, such as 44.0 points per game for Pavia in 1991–92. He even scored 66 points in a single game against Auxilium Torino.

Many prestigious organizations have recognized his impact on the sport. In 1991, he was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players. He received the Olympic Order in 1997. On August 20, 2010, he was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2017, he joined the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame. Several of his former teams, including JuveCaserta, Pavia, and Flamengo, retired his jersey numbers to honor his legacy.

Schmidt's influence extends to the next generation of basketball stars. While playing in Italy, he earned the admiration of a young Kobe Bryant. Bryant lived in Italy at the time because his father, Joe Bryant, played there. Bryant later identified Schmidt as one of his childhood idols. Many experts have noted his greatness, with some suggesting he could have been one of the greatest players in NBA history. His career serves as a bridge between international basketball and the global popularity of the sport today.
