He specialized as an outside hitter, a role that requires both defensive skill and offensive power. Throughout the 2000s, Giba was widely considered one of the premier volleyball players on the planet. His career was defined by intense physical energy and a leadership style that motivated entire teams. He is most famous for his historic success with the Brazilian national team. His impact on the sport eventually led to his induction into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2018.

To succeed as a world-class wing spiker, Giba had to overcome physical limitations. He was not exceptionally tall for a professional volleyball player. To compensate, he developed extraordinary jumping abilities and unique physical skills. This allowed him to strike the ball with high velocity and precision from above the net. His style of play combined spectacular athleticism with a high-speed drive. This combination made him a favorite among fans and a difficult opponent for any defense. His ability to perform under pressure helped him earn the title of team captain.

Giba's professional journey took him across several different global volleyball leagues. He began his club career in Brazil with teams like Curitibano, Cocamar, and Minas. He later moved to Italy to play for Yahoo! Ferrara in the Serie A1 division. In 2003, he signed with Noicom BreBanca Cuneo, where he won the Italian Cup in 2006. He was named the Most Valuable Player of that competition. His career then took him to Russia to play for Iskra Odintsovo for two years. He also played in Argentina for Club Ciudad de Bolívar and briefly in the United Arab Emirates for Al-Nasr Dubai.

The history of Giba's international career is often described as the "Golden Era" of Brazilian volleyball. He debuted for the national team in 1995 at just 18 years old. That same year, he won his first major title at the South American Championship. Under the coaching of Bernardo Rezende, Giba became a leader of a dominant squad. This era included legendary players like Dante, André, Gustavo, André Heller, Ricardo Garcia, and Sérgio Santos. After a loss in the 2002 World League final, the Brazilian team began a massive winning streak. They went on to win 11 consecutive major international competitions.

The sheer number of titles Giba won is a testament to his dominance. He helped Brazil secure three World Championships in 2002, 2006, and 2010. He also won eight World League titles and three World Grand Champions Cups. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he led Brazil to a gold medal.

Even as he aged, Giba remained a vital force in the sport. In 2008, at age 32, he remained a starter as Brazil faced challenges from teams like the United States. In 2010, even when he was not a regular starter, he remained the team captain. He helped the squad win its third World Championship in Italy that year. During the 2012 London Olympics, he was brought onto the court for his international farewell during the gold medal match.

Beyond the volleyball court, Giba has dedicated much of his life to social responsibility. He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was only six months old. Because of this personal history, he works closely with children fighting the same disease. He also supports various campaigns, including those against prostate cancer and breast cancer. He has served as the president of the FIVB Athletes’ Commission, representing players from nine different countries. Through his book, "Giba Neles!", and his various charity projects, he continues to influence the world far beyond the boundaries of the volleyball court.
