As a central defender, Figueroa had a very special way of playing. He was great at reading the game to stop attacks before they happened. He used tight marking to keep opponents away from the goal. Once he won the ball, he did not just kick it away. He used his vision and calm style to start new attacks with smart passes. Sometimes he would even run forward to help his teammates score. He was strong in the air and very good in one-on-one battles.

Figueroa's journey began in his hometown of Valparaíso, Chile. He was born on October 25, 1946. He started playing with local teams like Deportivo Alto Florida. By 1962, he joined the youth system of Santiago Wanderers. He turned professional in 1963 when he was only 16 years old. After playing in Chile, he moved to Uruguay to play for Peñarol in 1967. At that time, Peñarol was one of the best teams in the world. He won many championships there before moving to Brazil in 1972.
