People called him "the Black Marvel" because he was so talented. He played as a wing-half, which is a position in the middle of the field. He was a very fast and smart player. People loved watching him play because he was so technical. He could control the game without needing to be much bigger than others. His skill helped Uruguay become a very strong team in the 1920s.

Andrade had many different jobs before he became a star. He once worked as a musician in a carnival parade. He played the drums, the violin, and the tambourine. He also led a drum group called comparsa Libertadores de Africa. Other jobs he held included being a newspaper salesman and a shoeshiner. These jobs showed how hard he worked before his soccer career took off. He played for clubs like Misiones and Bella Vista early in his life.

His soccer career was full of great wins and big moments. He won gold medals at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. He won another gold medal at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. In 1930, he helped Uruguay win the very first FIFA World Cup. He was even named to the All-Star team after that big tournament. He also won several South American Championships between 1923 and 1926. These victories made him a hero in his home country.

Life was not always easy for Andrade during his famous years. In 1928, he hit a goal post during a game against Italy. This accident hurt his eye very badly. Later, he became blind in that one eye. He also faced serious health struggles that changed his life. A doctor in Brussels told him he had a disease called syphilis. These hard times made him feel very sad and lost his speed on the field.

Even with these struggles, his name is still remembered today. In 1994, a magazine named him the tenth best player in World Cup history. A special plaque was placed at the Estadio Centenario to honor him. His nephew, Víctor Rodríguez Andrade, even used his name as a surname. This shows how much his family and country respected him. He remains a symbol of great skill and talent in the world of sports.
