People called him "the Black Marvel." He was a very fast and smart player. He played the role of a wing-half. This means he played in the middle of the field.

José helped his team win many big prizes. He won two gold medals at the Olympic Games. He also helped Uruguay win the first FIFA World Cup in 1930. He was even named to the All-Star team after that tournament.

Before he was a star, José had many jobs. He played drums in a carnival parade. He also sold newspapers and shined shoes.

His life had some hard parts too. During a game in 1928, he hit a goal post. This hurt his eye very badly. He later became blind in that eye. He also faced health problems that made his life difficult later on. Even so, people still honor his skill. A plaque was placed at the Estadio Centenario to remember him.
