He was a defender who played with great skill. He was known for his calm way of playing. He could stop an attack very quickly. Then, he used smart passes to start a new play. Many people called him "Don Elías" out of respect. He was a very fair player, too. He only received one red card in his whole career.

Figueroa played for many famous clubs. He played for Peñarol in Uruguay and Internacional in Brazil. He won 22 titles during his long career. He was also the captain for every team he joined. He played in three FIFA World Cups for Chile. In 1974, he was named the best defender in that tournament. He won many awards, like South American Footballer of the Year. He won this prize three years in a row. Even the great Pelé named him one of the best players ever. Fans still remember his "Illuminated goal" in Brazil. That was a goal scored right as a beam of sunlight hit him.
