He is best known as the founder and former chairman of the Inditex fashion group. This group operates many famous clothing and accessory chains, such as Zara and Bershka. Ortega is widely considered a pioneer in the concept of fast fashion. This business model focuses on moving clothing from design to retail stores very quickly. As of 2026, his net worth was estimated at US$147 billion. This makes him the second-wealthiest person in Europe and the 10th-wealthiest in the world.

Ortega's career began with hands-on experience in the garment industry. He moved to A Coruña at the age of 14 because of his father's job. He found work as a shop hand for a local shirtmaker called Gala. In this role, he learned the technical skills of making clothes by hand. In 1963, he founded his own company, Confecciones Goa, which specialized in selling quilted bathrobes. A major turning point occurred in 1975 when he and his wife, Rosalía Mera, opened the very first Zara store. This small beginning eventually grew into a massive international retail network.

The Inditex group, or Industrias de Diseño Textil Sociedad Anónima, serves as the parent company for many brands. Ortega owned 59.29% of the group in 2009. The company manages a diverse portfolio of labels, including Massimo Dutti, Oysho, Zara Home, and Stradivarius. It also includes brands like Pull and Bear, Bershka, and Kiddy's Class. Today, the group operates over 6,000 stores globally and employs more than 92,000 people. Ortega eventually stepped down as head of Inditex in 2011, passing leadership to the CEO, Pablo Isla.

Beyond fashion, Ortega has built a massive empire through real estate and financial investments. He manages these assets through his investment company, Pontegadea. In July 2020, his property holdings were valued at $17.2 billion. His real estate portfolio is spread across many major global cities. In Spain, he owns numerous properties in Madrid and Barcelona, specifically along busy business streets. Internationally, his holdings include major cities like London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Lisbon. He also owns significant buildings in the United States, such as the Haughwout Building in Manhattan and office buildings in Seattle.

Ortega's wealth has reached historic peaks throughout his career. For a brief period in 2015, he was actually the richest man in the world. This happened when the stock of Inditex peaked, bringing his net worth to $80 billion. In 2021, his fortune was estimated at approximately 73.1 billion euros. Although he has faced financial shifts, such as losing $10 billion due to the coronavirus pandemic, his influence remains vast. He is currently the second-wealthiest retailer in the entire world.

Philanthropy is another major part of Ortega's legacy through the Amancio Ortega Foundation. Established in 2001, this non-profit organization focuses on education and social welfare. The foundation provides scholarships that allow students to complete their Baccalaureate studies in Canada or the United States. In the 2016/17 academic year alone, the foundation awarded 500 such scholarships. Ortega also uses his wealth to support healthcare. In 2017, he announced a €320 million donation to help combat cancer in Spain. This funding helped hospitals acquire 440 machines to detect and treat the disease.

These medical investments have had a measurable impact on public health infrastructure. Because of his contributions, the number of Spanish public hospitals with stereotactic radiotherapy machines rose from 20 to 70. Ortega has also supported other relief efforts, such as a €20 million donation to Caritas Internationalis in 2012. More recently, in November 2024, he created a €100 million fund to help populations affected by the DANA weather system in Valencia. His work connects the worlds of high-level global business, large-scale real estate, and significant social support systems.
