It functions as an international shipping line that moves goods across the planet. MSC is currently the world's largest container shipping company. This status is based on both its total fleet size and its cargo capacity. As of November 2025, the company controlled 21.2% of the total global container capacity.

The company even manages rail freight transport through its subsidiaries. These trains operate across the Iberian Peninsula, specifically in Portugal and Spain. This multi-modal approach allows the company to move products via sea, air, and land.

The company is structured into several distinct business divisions. One major branch is MSC Cruises, which focuses on holiday travel. It is the third-largest cruise company in the world, holding a 10% share of all passengers in 2025. Another division is MSC Air Cargo, a virtual cargo airline. This airline uses Boeing 777F aircraft to transport freight. The company also operates Medway, which handles rail operations in Europe. Finally, Terminal Investment Ltd. (TiL) manages 45 different port terminals globally.

The history of MSC began with a single vessel and a small vision.

In 1970, seafaring captain Gianluigi Aponte and his wife, Rafaela Aponte-Diamant, founded the company in Naples, Italy. They purchased their first ship, named Patricia, to start operations. Initially, the line operated between the Mediterranean and Somalia. The company grew by purchasing second-hand cargo ships to expand its reach. By 1977, services reached northern Europe, Africa, and the Indian Ocean. In 1978, the company moved its headquarters to Geneva, Switzerland.

MSC has a long history of breaking records regarding ship size.

In January 2015, the company launched the MSC Oscar, which held the record for the world's largest container ship. The MSC Oscar had a capacity of 19,224 TEU, which is a measure of container volume. Later, in July 2019, the MSC Gülsün was launched with a capacity of 23,756 TEU. In March 2023, the company broke the record for the largest ship twice in just three days. The MSC Tessa arrived on March 10, followed by the MSC Irina on March 13. The MSC Irina reached a massive capacity of 24,345 TEU.

Over the years, MSC has bought stakes in many different companies to expand. In 2017, it purchased a 49% stake in the Messina Line. In 2022, it completed the acquisition of Bolloré Africa Logistics. It also acquired a 67% stake in the Brazilian carrier Log-In Logistica in 2021. More recently, in 2024, the company acquired Gram Car Carriers and a stake in the Il Secolo XIX newspaper group. These moves allow MSC to control more parts of the global supply chain.

Today, MSC is a massive organization with a global footprint. It operates 524 offices across 155 different countries. The company employs more than 200,000 people worldwide. Its ships sail on more than 215 different trade routes and visit over 500 ports. To improve technology, MSC launched iReefer in 2025. This is a digital platform used to monitor refrigerated cargo. It provides live data on temperature and humidity to ensure goods stay fresh. This connection between massive physical ships and digital monitoring shows how modern shipping works.
