Maritime transport, also known as ocean transport or waterborne transport, is the movement of people and goods via waterways. This system includes travel across oceans, lakes, rivers, and man-made canals.

It is a vital part of global logistics and human society. Throughout history, humans have developed shipbuilding and river engineering to move things more easily. This led to the creation of many canal ages in various civilizations. Today, maritime transport remains a cornerstone of the global economy.

Water transport offers several distinct advantages and disadvantages compared to other methods. It is much cheaper than using aircraft or land vehicles like trucks and trains. This cost-effectiveness makes it ideal for moving heavy loads or bulk cargo. However, maritime transport is significantly slower for long journeys than air travel. It is also heavily dependent on having adequate port facilities to load and unload. Because of these factors, it is less practical for time-critical or perishable goods.

In terms of global impact, the numbers are quite large. According to UNCTAD, maritime transport accounted for roughly 80% of international trade in 2020. The scale of the merchant fleet is also massive. In 2005, there were 30,936 merchant ships in the world measuring at least 1,000 gross register tons. By 2010, this number rose to 38,988, representing a 26% increase.

This industry relies on professional mariners, known as merchant seamen or sailors. Interestingly, one quarter of all merchant mariners were born in the Philippines.

Ships can be categorized by how they operate their routes. A liner is a ship that follows a regular run on a fixed schedule. These ships must be better equipped to handle delays caused by bad weather. They are typically higher powered and more expensive to build than other types. They are often used for passengers or containers. In contrast, a tramp, or trader, has no fixed route. A tramp ship will go wherever a suitable cargo takes it.

For example, a tramp might carry grain from Canada to Latvia, then move coal from Britain to Melanesia.

There are many specialized types of cargo ships used today. Container ships, often called "box boats," carry goods in truck-sized containers. This method, known as containerization, revolutionized the industry starting in the 1970s.

Bulk carriers are designed to carry loose items like ore, coal, or grains. These ships often have large, box-like hatches on their decks.

Other vessels serve specific transport needs. Roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ships use built-in ramps to let wheeled cargo, like cars, drive on and off.

While ocean liners once provided scheduled long-distance travel, they have largely been replaced by cruise ships. Even smaller craft like ferries or barges play roles in moving people and goods across shorter distances.

Maritime transport is also connected to complex infrastructure and technology. When cargo is moved using more than one mode of transport, it is called intermodal or co-modal transport. This connects ships to roads and railways to complete a journey. Some specialized vessels, like cable layers, use advanced dynamic positioning systems to lay underwater telecommunications cables.
