Giorgio Armani was a world-renowned Italian fashion designer and the founder of the luxury fashion house, Giorgio Armani S.p.A.

He is considered one of the most influential figures in contemporary fashion history. Armani became famous for creating minimalist and deconstructed silhouettes. This means his clothing, especially his jackets and suits, used simpler, softer shapes rather than stiff, traditional ones. This approach redefined elegance for both men and women in a modern way. His influence extended far beyond the runway, shaping how celebrities dress on red carpets and how luxury brands operate globally.

Armani’s journey to fashion began with unexpected paths. Born in Piacenza on July 11, 1934, he grew up in modest circumstances during World War II.

During this time, he experienced the hardships of poverty and survived a severe burn from an unexploded artillery shell. He initially pursued medical studies at the University of Milan for three years. However, he left his studies in 1953 to serve in the Italian Army. Because of his medical background, he was assigned to the Military Hospital in Verona. After his military service, he entered the fashion industry as a window dresser and sales clerk at La Rinascente in Milan.

His professional rise involved several distinct stages of design and collaboration. In the mid-1960s, he moved to the Nino Cerruti company to design menswear. During this decade, he was a highly sought-after freelance designer, contributing to as many as ten different manufacturers at once. In 1973, he partnered with architectural draftsman Sergio Galeotti to open a private design office in Milan. This partnership led to the official founding of Giorgio Armani S.p.A. on July 24, 1975.

That same year, he launched his first ready-to-wear collections for both men and women.

As the brand grew, Armani developed a complex system of different product lines to reach various markets. He established the Main line for high-end international fashion and introduced Emporio Armani to offer stylish products at more accessible prices. He also created AX Armani Exchange, a line focused on casual, everyday clothing like T-shirts for younger consumers.

His brand expanded into many other sectors, including Armani Beauty for cosmetics and perfumes, and various lines for eyewear, underwear, and home furnishings. This diversification allowed the Armani name to become a global symbol of a complete luxury lifestyle.

Armani used unique methods to cement his international reputation, particularly through the film industry. He designed costumes for more than 100 films, including notable works like *The Untouchables* (1987). A major turning point occurred in 1980 with the film *American Gigolo*. In a famous scene, actor Richard Gere showcased Armani's shirts and outfits, which helped project the brand to a massive global audience.

This connection between high fashion and cinema helped define the visual style of the 1980s and beyond.

Beyond aesthetics, Armani used his platform to advocate for ethical and sustainable practices. In 2007, he became the first major designer to ban underweight models from his shows. This decision followed the tragic death of a model due to anorexia nervosa.

He also embraced environmental responsibility by participating in the Green Carpet Challenge in 2011, creating garments from recycled plastics and fabrics. Furthermore, he was a pioneer in digital fashion, broadcasting his Armani Privé Spring/Summer 2007 collection live via the internet and cellular phones.

Today, the Armani legacy is vast, touching everything from high-end jewelry to luxury hospitality. He established the Armani Hotel Collection, which includes the Armani Hotel in the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai.

His business reach also includes designing uniforms for professional sports teams and creating fine jewelry collections, such as the 2022 "Josephine" collection. By 2017, his annual turnover reached $1.6 billion. His career demonstrates how a single designer's vision can expand from a simple suit into a massive, multi-industry global empire.
