Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani was a preeminent Italian fashion designer. He founded the luxury fashion house Valentino S.p.A. in 1960. He served as the creative director for the company until 2007. Valentino was known for his flamboyant style and retro pieces. The process of creating a luxury fashion house involves many complex steps. Valentino began by apprenticing under local designers in his hometown of Voghera. He later moved to Paris to attend the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He also studied at the École de la Chambre Syndicale. After his studies, he worked at various ateliers, including those of Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche. In 1960, he opened his own fashion house on Via Condotti in Rome. This operation was a grand maison de haute couture, or high-fashion house. He even flew models in from Paris for his debut shows.

Valentino's career can be divided into several distinct stylistic stages. In the 1960s, he gained international fame through his use of vivid colors. He was specifically famous for his red dresses, known as Rosso Valentino. During the 1970s, his work shifted toward different trends. He explored 1940s revivals with padded shoulders and platform shoes. He also experimented with peasant silhouettes, such as dirndl skirts and ponchos. By the 1980s, he embraced a high-glamour style. This era featured broad-shouldered, sharply tailored suits and opulent ballgowns.

The history of the Valentino brand is tied to several key figures. Valentino met his long-term business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, in 1960. They met at the Café de Paris on the Via Veneto. Giammetti abandoned his architecture studies to support the business. This partnership was vital because the atelier faced a precarious financial situation early on. Excessive spending nearly led the company to bankruptcy. However, the brand eventually became a leading force in global fashion. In 1998, Valentino and Giammetti sold the company to the HdP Group for US$300 million.

The significance of Valentino's work is reflected in impressive numbers and honors. By 1986, Vogue reported he was the largest Italian fashion exporter. His international sales reached US$385 million that year. He was also the first Italian designer to feature on Parisian haute couture catwalks. For his contributions, he received many prestigious awards. He was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1986. He was also a Knight of the Legion of Honour in France.

Many notable examples of his influence exist in popular culture. Elizabeth Taylor wore a white haute couture column for the premiere of Spartacus in 1961. Jacqueline Kennedy was a devoted client who wore his black-and-white dresses. She wore these designs during her year of mourning after the death of President John F. Kennedy. Valentino also designed the white gown for Kennedy's wedding to Aristotle Onassis. In 1984, he even designed the uniforms for Italian athletes at the Summer Olympics.

Valentino's influence extends into broader cultural and social systems. He used his platform to engage with art and charity. In 1990, he opened the Accademia Valentino, a cultural space for art exhibitions in Rome. He and Giammetti also created L.I.F.E. to support patients related to HIV/AIDS. His aesthetic also crossed into other industries, such as automotive design. From 1983 to 1985, he contributed a Valentino Edition to the Lincoln car line. His work remains a staple of how luxury and celebrity are connected.
