Christian Louboutin is a prominent French fashion designer. He is best known for creating luxury footwear. His designs often feature the stiletto, a high-heeled shoe with a thin, spiked heel. His primary goal is to make women look beautiful and sexy. He aims to make their legs appear as long as possible. He achieves this through dressier evening-wear designs. These often include decorative touches like bows, feathers, and jeweled straps. He also uses materials such as patent leather to add shine.

The most recognizable element of his work is the red-lacquered sole. This signature feature was actually created by accident. Louboutin was working on a shoe design inspired by Andy Warhol's artwork titled "Flowers." He felt the black sole of the shoe lacked impact. While he was working, an assistant sat nearby painting her nails red. Louboutin grabbed her red nail polish and applied it to the sole. This moment created the iconic red bottom. The specific color used for this signature is Pantone 18-1663 TPX.

Louboutin's career path was shaped by diverse experiences. He was born in Paris in 1964. As a teenager, he traveled to Egypt and spent a year in India. In 1981, he returned to Paris with a portfolio of elaborate high-heel drawings. He eventually secured employment with the house Charles Jourdan. He later became an apprentice in the atelier of Roger Vivier. Vivier was a famous designer who invented the modern stiletto and the chrome-plated buckle pump. Louboutin also worked as a freelance designer for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.

After a brief period as a landscape gardener, Louboutin returned to fashion. He established his own company in 1991. He used funds from two backers to open a shoe salon in Paris. His first customer was Princess Caroline of Monaco. Her praise for the store was published by a fashion journalist. This helped increase his renown very quickly. Famous clients soon followed, including Catherine Deneuve and Diane von Fürstenberg. Many modern celebrities, such as Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, also wear his designs.

The brand has grown into a massive global enterprise. It offers luxury footwear for men and women, as well as handbags, fragrances, and makeup. The company generates approximately $300 million in annual revenue. About 95% of this money comes from shoe sales. The remaining 5% comes from handbags and purses. The company expects handbags to eventually represent 20% of total annual sales. Geographically, the United States accounts for 52% of sales. Europe, the Middle East, and Russia make up 30%. Asia accounts for the remaining 18%.

Because the red sole is so unique, it is a protected trademark. This has led to several legal battles regarding trademark infringement. In the United States, Louboutin sued Yves Saint Laurent in 2011. The case involved a request for $1 million in damages. A judge eventually ruled that Louboutin holds an exclusive right to the red sole. However, there is a specific condition to this rule. The red sole is protected when the rest of the shoe is a different color. If the entire shoe is red, other designers like Yves Saint Laurent can still use red soles.

Today, the brand is supported by a large international team. As of 2012, the firm employed 420 staff members known as "Loubi's Angels." Most footwear is manufactured at a factory in Milan, Italy. He also maintains a small atelier in Paris for one-of-a-kind creations. Prices for his shoes vary significantly based on complexity. Standard pairs can start from $500. Crystal-encrusted versions can cost up to $6,000. A custom-made pair has a base price of $4,000. This level of detail and luxury maintains his status in the fashion world.
