He leads his own fashion label, Marc Jacobs, and has influenced global style for decades. His work is known for a "street wise aesthetic." This means he mixes different styles together, such as preppy, grunge, and couture. He does not aim to create clothes that look "hot" or purely hedonistic. Instead, he focuses on curiosity and individuality. His designs often celebrate equality and the spirit of the people who wear them.

Designing a fashion career involves many distinct stages of growth. Jacobs began his journey at age 15 as a stockboy at Charivari.

While studying at Parsons School of Design, he sold hand-knit sweaters. He later designed for the Sketchbook label under Reuben Thomas, Inc. In 1986, he launched his first collection under his own name. He eventually partnered with Robert Duffy to form Jacobs Duffy Designs. This partnership helped him grow into a major industry figure.

Jacobs has managed several different types of fashion lines. His primary label, Marc Jacobs, focuses on upscale fashion. He also created a diffusion line called Marc by Marc Jacobs. This secondary line was very successful for about 15 years. At its peak, it operated over 200 retail stores in 80 different countries.

After the 2015 fall/winter collection, he discontinued this line to focus on his main brand. He also launched Heaven, a line for younger audiences that blurs gender boundaries.

His professional history includes leadership roles at major fashion houses. From 1997 to 2014, Jacobs served as the creative director for Louis Vuitton. In this role, he created the company's very first ready-to-wear clothing line. He collaborated with famous artists like Takashi Murakami and Kanye West. He also worked as the creative director for Diet Coke in 2013. This included a year-long "stylish and light-hearted" makeover for the brand. His career has been marked by both high-profile roles and creative independence.

Jacobs has received many prestigious awards throughout his life. In 1984, he won the Perry Ellis & Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award. In 1987, he became the youngest designer to receive the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. He also won the Women's Designer of the Year award in 1993. His influence was recognized globally when Time magazine included him on its "2010 Time 100" list. This list identifies the 100 most influential people in the world. He was also ranked highly on lists of powerful figures in America.

His work often connects fashion to fine art and celebrity culture.

Jacobs uses avant-garde advertising campaigns instead of traditional model settings. He often features cultural icons, artists, and celebrities in his stories. For his Spring 2016 campaign, he used a "visual narrative" approach. He described these campaigns as a personal diary of people who inspire him. This method helps his clothing tell a story about individuality. He even used social media to cast models for his campaigns.

Jacobs's career also shows how fashion interacts with social issues and ethics. In 2009, he released a shirt demanding the legalization of gay marriage. He has also been involved in discussions regarding animal welfare. In 2013, reports noted the use of raccoon dog fur in some garments. In response to pressure from activists, he pledged in 2024 to stop using animal fur. He has not used or sold animal fur since 2018. This shows how a designer's choices can change in response to the world around them.
