Calvin Klein is a prominent American fashion designer. He is known for creating a wide variety of products. These include clothing, perfumes, watches, and jewelry. His work is defined by a specific aesthetic known as a "clean look." This style focuses on simplicity and neat lines. Through his brand, Klein has become a major figure in the global fashion industry.

Klein's professional journey began with a very small operation. In 1968, he launched his first company with his childhood friend, Barry K. Schwartz. Schwartz served as his business manager. Initially, Klein worked out of a hotel room to design coats. He eventually brought these designs to Bonwit Teller, a retail store. A buyer there liked his work, which helped him gain visibility. He later became a protégé of Baron de Gunzburg. This connection introduced him to the elite fashion scene in New York.

Klein's design philosophy reached a turning point with his denim collection. In 1974, he designed signature tight-fitting jeans. These jeans were an immediate commercial success. They earned $200,000 in sales during their very first week. This success helped establish him as a mainstream leader in fashion. Critics even compared his talent to the famous designer Yves Saint Laurent. He was frequently praised for his ability to maintain clean lines in his garments.

His early life provided the foundation for his creative career. Klein was born on November 19, 1942, in the Bronx, New York City. His parents were Flore and Leo Klein. His father had immigrated to New York from Boiany, Austria-Hungary. Klein grew up in the Jewish community in the Bronx. He attended J.H.S. 80 and the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. Later, he studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He briefly left the institute for six months before returning to finish his degree.

Throughout his career, Klein has received many prestigious honors. In 1974, he became the first designer to win a specific award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). This award was for Outstanding Design in Men’s and Women’s Wear. He won additional CFDA awards in 1981, 1983, and 1993. In 1983, he was also included on the International Best Dressed List. In 2003, the Fashion Institute of Technology granted him an honorary doctorate.

Klein's personal life and interests are also well-documented. He has been married twice. His first marriage was to textile designer Jayne Centre in 1964. They had a daughter named Marci Klein, who became a television producer. They divorced in 1974. In 1986, he married his assistant, Kelly Rector, in Rome. The couple later separated, and their divorce was finalized in 2006. Klein has also owned several significant properties. He once owned a home in Fire Island Pines known as "The Calvin Klein House." In 2003, he built a $75 million glass-and-concrete mansion in Southampton, New York.

Beyond fashion, Klein has engaged with various social and cultural spheres. He is a supporter of the U.S. Democratic Party. Since 1980, he has given over $250,000 to candidates and political action committees. He also uses his fame to support charitable causes. In 1998, he participated in a celebrity reading of "The Emperor's New Clothes." This event benefited The Starbright Foundation, which helps ill children. His influence even extends into popular media. He made a cameo in the television series "30 Rock." Additionally, an actor named Alessandro Nivola will portray him in the 2026 series "Love Story."
