Tom Ford is a prominent American fashion designer and filmmaker. He is recognized for his significant influence on global style and luxury branding. Ford rose to fame through his leadership of major fashion houses. He served as the creative director for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. In 2005, he launched his own eponymous brand, which includes menswear, beauty, and accessories. Beyond fashion, he has also established a career in cinema. He served as the chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 2019 to 2022.

Ford's journey began in Texas, where he grew up in Houston and San Marcos. He later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, at age 11. His education was diverse, including studies at Bard College and New York University. At NYU, he focused on art history. He later moved to New York City to study interior architecture at Parsons The New School for Design.

During his time in New York, he frequented the famous club Studio 54. The disco-era glamour of that club became a major influence on his later aesthetic designs.

Before achieving major success, Ford gained experience through various internships and assistant roles. He spent a year and a half in Paris working in the press office for the fashion house Chloé. This role helped spark his interest in the fashion industry. Upon graduating from The New School, he worked as a design assistant for American designer Cathy Hardwick. He demonstrated intense persistence by calling her every day for a month to secure an interview. Ford eventually moved to the company Perry Ellis in 1988, where he worked for two years.

In 1990, Ford made a pivotal move to Milan, Italy. He was hired by the Italian fashion house Gucci to design women's ready-to-wear clothing. At the time, Gucci was struggling financially and was far from being a strong brand. Ford worked incredibly hard, often performing eighteen-hour days to manage eleven different product lines.

His role expanded quickly from women's clothing to menswear and shoes. By 1994, he was promoted to Creative Director, the person who leads the entire design vision. Under his leadership, Gucci's sales increased by 90% between 1995 and 1996. By 1999, the company's value had grown to more than $4 billion.

Ford's influence extended to the label Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) after Gucci acquired it in 1999. He was named Creative Director for YSL, helping to bring the classic house back into the mainstream. His work often involved provocative advertising campaigns for YSL fragrances, such as Opium and M7. These campaigns were sometimes controversial due to their bold imagery. Despite such criticisms, Ford earned numerous awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2004, he left the Gucci Group following disagreements over corporate control.

In 2006, Ford launched his personal brand, Tom Ford. He describes his target customers as international, cultured, and well-traveled. His designs are worn by many high-profile celebrities and public figures. For example, Daniel Craig wore Ford-designed suits in his final four James Bond films. He also designed over 600 pieces for Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience World Tour.
