For many years, she served as the editor-in-chief of Vogue, a premier fashion magazine. Currently, she holds the role of global chief content officer and artistic director at Condé Nast. Wintour is famous for her signature pageboy bob haircut and dark sunglasses.

Beyond magazines, she is a central figure in the fashion world as the lead chairperson of the Met Gala. This annual haute couture spectacle takes place in Manhattan every year. She is widely regarded as the most powerful woman in the business of publishing.

Wintour's career followed a path of rapid ascent through various editorial roles. Her interest in fashion began as a teenager in London. She was inspired by watching television shows like Ready Steady Go! and reading Seventeen magazine. Her father, Charles Wintour, helped her secure her first job at the Biba boutique at age 15.

She later trained at Harrods and worked in magazine production at Oz. In 1970, she joined Harper's & Queen as an editorial assistant. This early experience allowed her to build a reputation for finding the best people and locations for fashion shoots. She eventually moved to the United States to pursue higher positions in New York City.

In New York, Wintour learned how to transform the business of fashion journalism. While working at the magazine New York, she realized the power of celebrity. She noticed that putting famous people on magazine covers helped sell more copies. This insight, which Grace Coddington noted Wintour saw before others, became a key part of her strategy. She later worked at Savvy, a magazine targeting professional women. This helped her understand the specific audience she would later lead at Vogue. Her ability to identify emerging trends became one of her greatest professional strengths.

Wintour's leadership at Vogue involved significant and sometimes controversial changes. She first became the editor of British Vogue in 1885. During this time, she replaced much of the staff and exerted intense control. This earned her the nickname "Nuclear Wintour," and some employees called her tenure "The Wintour of Our Discontent."

In 1988, she took over the American edition of Vogue. She moved away from studio headshots of models. Instead, she favored full-body shots taken in outdoor settings.

Despite her success, Wintour has faced various forms of criticism throughout her career. Animal rights activists have attacked her for promoting the use of fur in fashion. Other critics have argued that her magazine promotes elitist or unattainable views of beauty and femininity. Her personality has also been described by some as aloof and demanding. These views were famously reflected in the 2003 book The Devil Wears Prada. The book, written by a former assistant, was a roman à clef believed to be based on her. It was later adapted into a major motion picture starring Meryl Streep.

Wintour's family history is also deeply connected to British media and nobility. Her father was the editor of the London-based Evening Standard from 1959 to 1976. Her paternal grandfather was a British military officer, Major-General Fitzgerald Wintour. Through her grandmother, she is a descendant of the 18th-century novelist Lady Elizabeth Foster. She also has a brother, Patrick Wintour, who is a journalist for The Guardian. These connections to media and history provided a foundation for her influential career.

Today, Wintour's influence extends across many different sectors of culture. The documentary film The September Issue explored her work and the creative teams at Vogue.
