It provides extensive coverage of style news, including haute couture, which refers to high-end fashion. The publication also explores beauty, runway shows, living, and various cultural topics. As a key part of the Condé Nast media collection, it serves as a major authority in the fashion industry. The magazine aims to connect readers with the latest trends and artistic expressions.

The publication follows a specific schedule for its various themed issues. Currently, the magazine is published eight times per year. These editions include the March issue for Spring and the September issue for Fall. Other notable editions are the May Met Gala Special and the October Vogue World issue. In 2020, the June and July issues were merged into one. In 2023, the January and February issues were also merged. Starting in 2026, Vogue will transition to a bi-monthly format, publishing eight times per year.

Vogue has a long history that began in 1892. Arthur Baldwin Turnure founded the publication as a weekly newspaper in New York City. He intended to celebrate the "ceremonial side of life." He wanted to attract socialites, businessmen, and those who wished to enter exclusive social circles. In 1909, Condé Montrose Nast purchased the magazine. Nast transformed Vogue into a women's magazine and grew it into a highly profitable business. During the First World War, printing moved to England to reach European markets. This move led to the creation of separate national editions.

The magazine has expanded into a massive international brand. As of March 2025, there are 28 international editions in existence. Eleven of these editions are published directly by Condé Nast. These include Vogue Arabia, Vogue France, Vogue Italia, and Vogue Japan. The remaining 16 editions are managed by licensees. British Vogue, launched in 1916, was the very first international edition. Some versions, such as Vogue Italia, are recognized as the top fashion magazines in the world.

Leadership has shaped the magazine's identity through many different eras. Anna Wintour served as editor-in-chief from 1988 to 2025. She worked to make the brand feel younger and more accessible to a wider audience. Under her leadership, the September 2012 edition reached 916 pages, the highest for any monthly magazine. After Wintour stepped down from the editor-in-chief role, the position was replaced by a Head of Editorial Content. Chloe Malle took over this role in September 2025. Wintour now serves as the Global Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director.

Throughout its history, Vogue has used various visual techniques to engage readers. In July 1932, the magazine published its first cover featuring a color photograph. This image, taken by Edward Steichen, showed a woman swimmer holding a beach ball.

The magazine also transitioned from fashion illustrations to photographic images in the late 1930s. Famous photographers like Richard Avedon and Irving Penn have contributed to its visual legacy. The covers have featured many icons, from the first Black woman cover model, Beverly Johnson, to the singer Madonna in 1989.

One of the most significant moments in the magazine's history occurred in April 1992. This issue celebrated the 100th anniversary of Vogue. The cover featured ten famous supermodels, including Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. This specific issue became the highest-selling edition in the magazine's history. The magazine's influence extends beyond just clothing to include the broader world of celebrity and art. It remains a central pillar in the global system of fashion media and cultural documentation.
